You have trodden, Abu Ishaq, with the firmest step,

and the weightiest, despite every resentful opponent.

May you be congratulated on the honor you were granted,

and may the builder of noble deeds, to whom you were given, be congratulated on you.

Through him you effortlessly surpassed the secretaries, as he surpassed

through you the royal lords of the house of Hashim.

You have both become joyful, each of you

having gained through his companion a victor’s prize.

And you are indeed a master’s precious good fortune,

just as he is a servant’s precious good fortune.

So let whoever wishes weep blood out of envy,

and let whoever wishes laugh to a madman’s exhaustion.

Indeed, by the sacrificial beasts with bleeding throats

at midmorning, and the mounts with bleeding footpads,

the caliphate has surely strengthened its mountain through you

with a firm buttress whose supports are not feeble.

I seem to see you appearing in Egypt, rising

over her with a radiant face, free of gloom.

So, on a day made sunny by your light, she remains

bound to a day made cloudy by your bounty.

You have saddled the pale camels for her, most auspicious of travelers,

and afterward her most fortunate newcomer will arrive.

Then you will fulfill hope’s promise to me with provisions

of bounty, borne on ground-scuffing, swift-trotting camels.

You send them swiftly, in full measure, and keep them coming,

and there is no good in kindness that does not endure.
