    فنلْ من اللهو حظاً قبلَ تُحتجَزُ

    You have put off pleasure, while the days demand their due;

so take your share of pleasure before you are confined.

Never leave a gap between two bouts of pleasure:

youth and the days of youth are opportunities.

Reply, “Hush!” to the women who say, “Stop!”

Let reproach find you unyielding when you are pressed.

My reproaching women make light of a rising sigh of regret,

as though my heart then writhed in deathly anguish,

when I shed my youth and pass beyond it tomorrow,

while life is my wealth and gray hair my shameful nickname.

    يُصخْ لما تَلْغوان الممسكُ اللَحِز

    My two reprovers, bestow your counsel on someone else;

let the tight-fisted miser heed your idle chatter.

Beyond a fair woman or clear tawny wine,

there is no offspring to rear, no gold to hoard.

What shall surely capture my hearing, rather than your babble,

is the beauty of lutes, songs, and quivering rhythms.

I have been told, Yaqub, that you are braced for attack:

you fashion odes to revile me, and compose rajaz.

Wait! I shall shower you with rain that will not clothe

a bare-branched tree, nor bring barren lands to life.

    وإن رجَزَتْ أتاك الرِّجْز لا الرَّجَز

    Odes that strike dead whoever is hit by them;

and if they chant rajaz, torment comes to you, not rajaz.

Each an outrageous invective: when reciters sing them,

the poets of humankind will have fallen silent before them.

Their branding iron strikes the skin, not merely one's honor,

and they cling to a man as taunting names never do.

One extraordinary poem comes at you, then another:

wave behind wave, they follow one another, rushing onward.

I have the long ones, their reins let loose,

of the odes, and the brief ones that roam far.

By God, when I revile you, my tongue has

no faltering, nor do I lack your disgraces to speak of.

I can indeed utter a statement whose truth is confirmed by

your young women, soft-bodied and ample-rumped.

By God, but for the women whose keeper you are,

fornicators would be chaste and their waistbands pure.

A gaping woman: an elephant slides into her,

its rump almost overtaking its chest.

You never mention a cock without her vulva stretching out,

and she is repeatedly seized by choking on saliva or by gagging.
