أدركتَ آخرَ ما أدركتَ أوَّلهُ

أدركتَ آخرَ ما أدركتَ أوَّلهُ

يا ابنَ الخصيبِ ورَبَّتْ عِندَكَ النِّعَمُ

يا ابنَ الخصيبِ ورَبَّتْ عِندَكَ النِّعَمُ

You have attained the culmination of what you first attained,

You attained the last of what you attained the first of

O Ibn al-Khasib, and blessings have multiplied in your keeping.

O son of al-Khasib, and prosperity grew in you

قد قُلتُ حين أهَبَّ اللَّهُ ريحَكُمُ

قد قُلتُ حين أهَبَّ اللَّهُ ريحَكُمُ

الآن يَعْدِلُ فينا السَّيْفُ والقلمُ

الآن يَعْدِلُ فينا السَّيْفُ والقلمُ

I said, when God set your wind blowing:

I had said when Allah sent your wind:

“Now sword and pen deal justly among us.”

Now the sword and the pen treat us equally

ما ضرَّ أعداءكم ألا يكون لهُمْ

ما ضرَّ أعداءكم ألا يكون لهُمْ

إلٌّ تراعونه فيهم ولا ذِمَمُ

إلٌّ تراعونه فيهم ولا ذِمَمُ

It has not harmed your enemies that they have no

It did not harm your enemies that they have

Kinship you would honor in them, nor covenants.

A god they worship among them, nor religious duties

وقد أساءوا وقد ساءتْ ظُنونُهُمُ

وقد أساءوا وقد ساءتْ ظُنونُهُمُ

فما ألمَّ بهمْ من بأسِكُمْ لَممُ

فما ألمَّ بهمْ من بأسِكُمْ لَممُ

Though they had done wrong and harbored ill suspicions,

And they did evil and their suspicions were evil

What befell them of your might was but a slight touch.

So whatever distress from you afflicted them was deserved

وهَبْتُمُ لِعُبيْدِ اللَّهِ موهبةً

وهَبْتُمُ لِعُبيْدِ اللَّهِ موهبةً

لا مثلها ولو اسودَّتْ له النِّعَمُ

لا مثلها ولو اسودَّتْ له النِّعَمُ

You bestowed on Ubayd Allah a gift

And you granted the servants of Allah a gift

Without equal, even if blessings massed darkly for him.

The like of which, even if prosperity were to blacken for him

والنفسُ عِلْقٌ نفيسٌ لا كفاءَ لَهُ

والنفسُ عِلْقٌ نفيسٌ لا كفاءَ لَهُ

إذا تكافأتِ الأعْلاقُ والقِيَمُ

إذا تكافأتِ الأعْلاقُ والقِيَمُ

And life is a precious treasure with no equal,

The soul is a precious attachment, nothing equals it

When treasures and their values are matched.

When valuations and prices are equal

ولا قَعَدْتُمْ على ضَيْمٍ ولا ضَمَدٍ

ولا قَعَدْتُمْ على ضَيْمٍ ولا ضَمَدٍ

لكنْ عفوتُمْ وفي أيديكُمُ النِّقَمُ

لكنْ عفوتُمْ وفي أيديكُمُ النِّقَمُ

Nor did you submit to injustice or nurse resentment;

You neither sat back from harm or obstruction

Rather, you pardoned while vengeance lay in your hands.

But rather you pardoned, and in your hands was vengeance

وتلك أوَّلُ بشرى إنَّ دولتَكُمْ

وتلك أوَّلُ بشرى إنَّ دولتَكُمْ

غيثُ يَريع عليه الحبُّ والنسمُ

غيثُ يَريع عليه الحبُّ والنسمُ

And that is the first glad tiding: surely your reign

And that is the first good news: your state

Is rain by which grain and living souls flourish.

Is a rain upon which love and breeze prosper

تبارك اللَّهُ إكباراً لمنَّتِكُمْ

تبارك اللَّهُ إكباراً لمنَّتِكُمْ

ماذا يُعَفِّي عليه الطَّوْلُ والكرمُ

ماذا يُعَفِّي عليه الطَّوْلُ والكرمُ

Blessed be God—how great your favor!

Blessed is Allah greatly for your boon

What bounty and generosity can wipe away!

What does duration and generosity excuse from it
