ما كان أشجعَه فيما به اعتمدَكْ

Woe to the physician whose two hands palpated your hand!

Alas for the physician whose hands felt your hand!

How bold he was in what he dared undertake with you!

How brave he was in what he undertook with you!

لو أن ألحاظه كانت مَباضِعَهُ

لو أن ألحاظه كانت مَباضِعَهُ

ثم انتحاك بها من رقَّةٍ فصدَكْ

ثم انتحاك بها من رقَّةٍ فصدَكْ

Had his glances been his lancets,

If his glances had been his lancets,

then, had he aimed them at you, he would have bled you, delicate as you are.

and he had then aimed them at you, he would have bled you, so delicate are you.

يا واضح الثغر كم تُدلُّ على ال

صَبِّ كأنْ قد أذقتَه بردَكْ

O radiant-smiled one, how coyly you treat the

O you with gleaming teeth, how you lord it over the

I marvel that you slew the valiant, mighty man, though

I marvel at your slaying the valiant, strong man; yet if

a man weak in strength, if he wished, could bend or bind you.
