When you laugh, we laugh amid your celebrations.

And if you weep, from us come streaming tears.

And if you are pleased, we are pleased with whoever is at peace with you.

And if you are angry, we are your proud partisans.

Yet when you graze at ease in your springtime,

We alone, then, are the gaunt ones there.

Ah, how many a pledge and promise from noble men

Come to nothing, while treachery and broken promises remain!

How long must one new turn of fortune pass away,

O you whom I love, and another new turn come,

While those who hope for your favors receive nothing from you

In hardship or ease but rebuffs and oaths?

It is as though you have forgotten, clever as you are,

That the noble, when asked for compassion, show compassion.

Do you eat your fill while we go hungry beside you,

From poverty—we, old friends, not newcomers?
