أغضبَني بالأمس ما سُمتَني

أغضبَني بالأمس ما سُمتَني

فأرضني منهُ ولا تَغْضَبِ

فأرضني منهُ ولا تَغْضَبِ

What you subjected me to yesterday angered me.

You angered me yesterday by what you called me

So make amends to me for it, and do not be angry.

So please me now and do not get angry

وكن إذا استُعْتِبتَ من جَفوةٍ

وكن إذا استُعْتِبتَ من جَفوةٍ

يا ابن علي خيرَ مستعتَبِ

يا ابن علي خيرَ مستعتَبِ

And when asked to make amends for a slight, be,

And if you are excused for an aloofness

O son of Ali, the best at making amends.

O son of Ali, best of those excused

أظهرَ ما تُضمِرُ لي كلَّهُ

أظهرَ ما تُضمِرُ لي كلَّهُ

حَملُكَ إيّايَ على الأجربِ

حَملُكَ إيّايَ على الأجربِ

All that you harbor toward me was revealed

Reveal to me everything you harbor

By your making me ride the mangy horse,

Your burdening me with the lame one

وأنني عاتبتُ فيما جرى

وأنني عاتبتُ فيما جرى

عليَّ من ذاك فلم أُعتبِ

عليَّ من ذاك فلم أُعتبِ

And by my reproaching you for what befell

And I reproached you for what happened

Me through that, yet receiving no redress.

To me from that, but I did not reproach

بل قلتَ في شِبْداز ما قُلتَهُ

بل قلتَ في شِبْداز ما قُلتَهُ

واضِعَ قدري رافِعَ المركَبِ

واضِعَ قدري رافِعَ المركَبِ

Rather, you said of Shibdaz what you said,

Rather you said in Shibdaz what you said

Lowering my worth while exalting the mount.

Degrading my worth, exalting the ship

وبين شِبْدازَ وبرْذَوْنِكُمْ

وبين شِبْدازَ وبرْذَوْنِكُمْ

لي مَركبٌ منِّي لم يُنكَبِ

لي مَركبٌ منِّي لم يُنكَبِ

And between Shibdaz and your hack,

And between Shibdaz and your Bardawan

I have a mount, part of me, that has suffered no mishap.

I have a ship from me that did not capsize

رِجلَي أولَى بيَ إنِّي امرؤٌ

رِجلَي أولَى بيَ إنِّي امرؤٌ

إذا عَدِمتُ الطِّرف لم أركَبِ

إذا عَدِمتُ الطِّرف لم أركَبِ

My feet suit me better; indeed, I am a man

My legs are more worthy of me, I am a man

Who will not ride without a noble steed.

If I lack sustenance I do not ride

ما أنا بالراضي ببعض الذي

ما أنا بالراضي ببعض الذي

أصبحت ترضَى لي فلا تُكذبِ

أصبحت ترضَى لي فلا تُكذبِ

I am not content with even part of what

I am not satisfied with some of what

You have come to deem fit for me, so do not deny it.

You have become satisfied with for me, so do not lie
