What made my poverty easier to bear

Was my long confinement under your humiliating treatment.

So now none of my food seems coarse

To me, nor any of my clothing rough.

May you be rewarded for the goodness of what I eat,

With good, and for the softness of what I wear.

How wondrous that you have quenched my thirst,

Though I sip from a watering place other than yours!

How many people have hoped for your bounty,

Whose prison is narrower than mine!

And among the favors of your generosity is that you

Never leave me without someone in whom to find consolation.

    Reviling you—and that alone—

Is what now fills my gathering.

I measured against the oppression I endure from you

My poverty—and did not err in my comparison.

So the touch of poverty, as I see it,

Pressed my nose into the dust more gently.
