لولا عبيدُ الله قلْـ

لولا عبيدُ الله قلْـ

ـت ولم أخف رَهَق الجُناحِ

ـت ولم أخف رَهَق الجُناحِ

Were it not for ʿUbayd Allāh, I would have said,

Had it not been for Obaydullah's slaves

And would not have feared the burden of blame:

I would have spoken without fear of wearying my wings

يا مادحَ القوم اللئا

يا مادحَ القوم اللئا

م وطالباً نيل الشِّحاحِ

م وطالباً نيل الشِّحاحِ

O praiser of ignoble people,

O you who praises the wicked people

And seeker of bounty from the miserly,

And seeks to attain vile gains

ما أنت في زمن المديـ

ما أنت في زمن المديـ

ـح ولا الهجاء ولا السماحِ

ـح ولا الهجاء ولا السماحِ

You are not in an age of praise,

You are not in times of eulogy

Nor of satire, nor of generosity.

Nor vituperation, nor reconciliation

حَدثت أكفٌّ ليس يُنـ

حَدثت أكفٌّ ليس يُنـ

ـبط ماءَها إلا المَساحي

ـبط ماءَها إلا المَساحي

Hands have arisen: nothing draws forth

Hands that cannot be sated

Their water but spades;

Except by the water carriers' bags

وجلود قوم ليس تأ

وجلود قوم ليس تأ

لم غير أطراف الرماحِ

لم غير أطراف الرماحِ

And people's skins feel no pain

And the skins of people who feel no pain

Except from the tips of spears.

Except from spear tips

ما شئتَ من مالٍ حِمىً

ما شئتَ من مالٍ حِمىً

يأوي إلى عِرْضٍ مباحِ

يأوي إلى عِرْضٍ مباحِ

As much inviolate wealth as you could wish

Take whatever wealth you wish as sanctuary

Takes refuge in honor open to attack.

To a reputation open to all

فاشغل قريضك بالنسيـ

فاشغل قريضك بالنسيـ

ـب وبالفكاهة والمزاحِ

ـب وبالفكاهة والمزاحِ

So occupy your verse with love poetry,

So occupy your talent with lineage

And with humor and jest.

And with jest and wit
