We have all sworn to sincere friendship.

So we strove; that is the effort of one who is able.

Then by what rulings do you make belief

in you compulsory, yet will not believe me?

And by what rulings is your word proof,

while mine is one of lightning's deceptive flashes?

It is not just for you to be judge of your own

word; return, then, to the straight path.

Neither of the two claims—if you add a claim—

is free of the need for verification.

And we are entitled, if you reject what you claim,

to reject what you claim, strictness for strictness.

And you described what is incumbent on brothers

in their honoring a friend's bond.

And you deemed lives easier to give than forsaking

a friend when rights lie dying.

By my life, you have spoken truly, even if

roaring fire had been waded through in his defense.

But natural dispositions draw their bearer after them

in every open space and narrow strait.

My reserve is inborn; it is no part of wisdom

that it should submit to a created being.
