To my friends I go down as easily as their drink,

but my enemies find me like fresh colocynth.

Were it not for a young man's proud refusal and bitterness,

he would overlook things that sting the eyes of him who overlooks them.

No weakness in me makes me accept what angers me,

nor is wrongdoing my way, that I should resent what pleases.

    لها سيرةٌ موضوعةٌ وهْي كالرَّكض

    I have a deliberation that lets no opportunity slip;

it moves at a measured pace, yet is like a gallop.

A target comes within my reach, yet I hold back,

and spare him, though he would shoot at my honor if I gave him an opening.

I restrain my hand out of forbearance and abundant magnanimity,

and my reach is ample, whether I extend my hand or draw it back.

I am indeed a victorious lion in battle,

lent the means of mauling, with claw and bite.

Whenever I brandish the spear on a day of battle

against a host, that host is the first to scatter.

Hosts dwindle in my eyes amid battle,

even if they come in full force—great stones and small pebbles alike.

The harm I deal rival champions when I meet them

is no light blow; nor is my thrust there a shallow prick.

The star of my judgment never sets amid calamities,

nor falls when the stars come falling down.

If the hidden depths of a dire predicament conceal

an ambush of dreaded harm, trust my scouting it out.

Secrets in their hiding-place disclose to me

    their twitching and throbbing movements,

through a surmise like eyesight, undivided,

    and unscattered when conjectures scatter.

My glance breaks open the seals of hidden thoughts,

but the seal of my own secrets is far from being broken.

I am truly patient under the rightful claim that befalls me,

even if enduring it wears my flesh away.

knowing that glory makes its people lean,

and that it comes not from bodies' height or breadth.

My reprovers leave to one another the rebuke of a noble man

who regards reproaches for generosity as encouragement.

When dispositions grow narrow, my own nature opens

into a spaciousness such as one like me attains.

I am ever saddling riding-camels despite weariness,

little concerned with wearing out what I wear out.

I sell the pleasure of sleep for the hardship of night travel,

when the sluggard's eye has drunk its fill of shut-eye.

That is not because I am ignorant of comfort,

but I have seen ease cling to lowliness.

    وهل بعده شيءٌ أشدُّ له غَرضِي

    I tighten my saddle to attain glory, girded for action;

is there anything beyond it for which I would tighten my girth?

If I wished, I could let my eyelids drink their fill of sleep,

and lean my sides against a soft, tender body.

I am the gaunt mount of noble deeds, their worn-out beast,

though I do not complain of weariness at being worn down.

I have an aspiration that holds in its thirst until it is quenched,

disdaining beast-fouled water and scant, shallow pools.

When men strive toward eminence but fall short,

I am fit to complete my ascent to it.

I stretch toward the highest distinction a hand of ample reach,

and a noble man's eye that is never told, 'Lower your gaze.'
