Time, whose Sunday sees its Saturday off,
Time passes its weeks, one after another
follows on without a break; its span never ends.
Continuous, endless is its duration
والحالُand our condition منof سعدٍgood fortune يساعدناhelps us

Our lot is good fortune that helps us
Our fortunes alternate between joy and sorrow
at times, and ill fortune whose misery gives way in turn.
One day makes us weep, the next we mourn it
يومٌa day يبكِّيناmakes us weep وآونةًand at times
يومٌa day يبكِّيناmakes us weep عليهfor it غَدُهْits morrow
One day makes us weep, and at other times
We mourn the past, yet from eras more
a day whose morrow makes us weep for it.
Our weeping flows, no end to its duration
نبكيwe weep علىfor زمنa stretch of time ومنْand because of زمنٍa stretch of time
فبكاؤناso our weeping موصولةٌjoined together مُدَدُهْits spans
We weep for one stretch of time, and because of another,
We see our woes made immortal
so the spans of our weeping run unbroken.
While life itself fades, finite its number
ونرىand we see مكارِهَناour afflictions مخلَّدةًmade everlasting
والعمرُand life يذهبpasses away فانياًdwindling عَدَدُهْits tally
We see our afflictions made everlasting,
Why no path to our redemption
while life slips away, its tally dwindling.
In eternity, infinite its expanse?
أفلاis there then no سبيلway إلىto تَبَحْبُحِناour living at ease

Is there, then, no way for us to dwell at ease
The intoxication of youth is unpunished by
in perpetuity, whose eternity never ends—
Old age, and ever-lasting its bounty

drunk with youth that is not followed
No good in a life which betrays us
by old age, and a life whose ease endures?
Deceiving are its moments, prolonged its length
لاno خيرgood فيin عيشٍa life تَخَوَّنُناwears us down
أوقاتُهُits hours وتَغولناand devours us مُدَدُهْits spans
There is no good in a life in which we are worn down
The youth is granted days, and must spend them
by its hours, and devoured by its spans.
Payment is but his skin, to be taken

وقصاصُهاand their requital أنthat يقترىis consumed جَلدُهْhis vigor
A young man is given days to spend,
He who loans time, destroys it
and their requital is that his vigor is consumed.
His body pays all its debts
منwhoever أقرضis lent الأوقاتَstretches of time أتلفَهاconsumes them

Whoever is lent time consumes it,
Until he is buried in a hollow
and his body repays all its loans,
No family or children left for him
حتىuntil يُغَيَّبَis hidden away فيin مُطَمْطَمَةٍa deep, dark pit
لاneither أهلُهhis family فيهاin it ولاnor ولَدُهْhis offspring
until he is hidden away in a deep, dark pit,
Worse yet, to be left without purpose
with neither his family nor his offspring there.
When a people have disappointed your loyalty
وأجَلُّand graver ذلكthat أنthat تُرِكتُI was left سُدىًneglected
منby قاصمQasim وأقرَّنيand let me stay بلَدُهْhis city
And graver still is that I was left neglected
A king whom when my hands grew blackened
by Qasim, and his city has housed me—
Made them white, by his hand
ملكa king إذاwhenever اسودّتْturns black لديَّtoward me يدٌa hand
منfrom غيرهsomeone other than him ابيضَّتturns white لديَّtoward me يدُهْhis hand
a king: whenever a hand turns black toward me,
Whatever we missed of aid or bounty
from someone else, his hand turns white toward me.
With kings it can there be found
مهماwhatever عَدِمْناwe lack منof سَدىًfavor وندىًand bounty
عندَamong الملوكkings فعندَهthen with him نَجِدُهْwe find it
Whatever favor and bounty we lack
His harm is but unintentional
among kings, we find with him.
He seeks to do good, and relies on it

Wrongdoing has no place in his intent,
He never ceased to raise and benefit me
and he desires kindness and makes it his aim.
Until I envied by foes, their envy fuels me

He has never ceased raising me up and benefiting me,
His virtues said to his aspirant
until my envier's envy did him harm.

"What a fine man to choose as your ally against Time!"
