    أمسى وكلُّ مقيمٍ بعده جالي

    Though he departed and we remained, he is surely a noble youth;

By evening, all who remained after him were exiles.

Indeed, though hearts' anguish was stirred by him,

How often in days past he spared them anguish's stirrings!

One whose like no earth has borne or lost,

Though the earth bears so many children and is so often bereaved.

He went far away—but not a distance ever to be crossed

By his visitors, at full speed or at a swift trot.

Nor is a brother near when he is concealed

By the excavated earth in his crumbling-sided grave.

When earth hides him half a spear's length down,

Then he has indeed fallen into abysses full of terrors.

For two friends, the earth between them is distance enough:

This one upon it, that one beneath it, decaying.
