قالوا هجاك أبو حفصٍ فقلتُ لهم

قالوا هجاك أبو حفصٍ فقلتُ لهم

أخي وخلِّي ونَدماني وصَفعاني

أخي وخلِّي ونَدماني وصَفعاني

They said, “Abu Hafs has lampooned you,” so I said to them:

They said Abu Hafs has satirized you, so I said to them,

He is my brother, my dear friend, my drinking companion, and the butt of my slaps.

"He is my brother, my friend, my drinking companion and my slapstick partner.

عِرضي له الدهرَ يهجوني وأصْفعهُ

عِرضي له الدهرَ يهجوني وأصْفعهُ

وإن أبى زدتُه أعراض إخواني

وإن أبى زدتُه أعراض إخواني

My honor is his forever: he lampoons me, and I slap him.

My honor is exposed to him, he satirizes me and I slap him back.

And if he refuses, I add my brothers’ honor to his share.

And if he refuses, I will increase his dishonor among my brothers."
