بات الأمير وبات بدر سمائنا

هذا يودعنا وهذا يكسفُ

The prince passed the night, and so did our sky’s full moon:

the one bidding us farewell, the other eclipsed.

قمر رأى قمراً يجود بنفسه

قمر رأى قمراً يجود بنفسه

فبكى عليه بعبرة لا تَذرِفُ

فبكى عليه بعبرة لا تَذرِفُ

A moon saw a moon yielding up his soul,

so it wept for him with a tear that did not fall.

لهفي لفقد محمد من هالك

لهفي لفقد محمد من هالك

ولمثله يتلهف المتلهف

ولمثله يتلهف المتلهف

Alas for the loss of Muhammad—what a man has perished!

And for one like him the mourner grieves.

فتكت به الأيام وهي عليمة

فتكت به الأيام وهي عليمة

أن سوف تتلف منه ما لا تخلف

أن سوف تتلف منه ما لا تخلف

The days struck him down, knowing full well

that in him they would destroy what they could not replace.

ورمته إذ وضع السلاح وطال ما

ورمته إذ وضع السلاح وطال ما

هابته وهو لنبلها مستهدف

هابته وهو لنبلها مستهدف

And they shot him when he laid down his arms, though for so long

they had feared him, even as he stood a target for their arrows.

أجدر بمغترٍّ بعيش خانه

أجدر بمغترٍّ بعيش خانه

أن لا يزخرفه لديه مزخرف

أن لا يزخرفه لديه مزخرف

How fitting for one beguiled by a life that betrayed him

that no embellisher should gild it in his eyes!
