The month of night prayer, though great is its sanctity,

Is a long month, heavy of shadow and sluggish in movement.

It walks ever so slowly; but when it pursues us,

Neither al-Sulayk nor al-Sulakah can match it.

As though it were a seeker of vengeance riding a horse,

Pressing hard after a quarry riding a mare.

I blame it, except for a time within it when I praise it:

From nightfall until the roosters crow.

And how can I praise blameworthy hours,

Shared between ceaseless toil and hunger?

How truthful the one who said, 'Blessed days'—

If 'blessing' was his byword for 'length'!

Were my life a road, I would find on it nothing

But fasting and its month—a hillock.

A month: my falling into it, in my agitation

And wretched state, is like a fish falling into a net.

Were it a master, and we like slaves to him,

It would be a miserly master, harsh in his treatment.

It nearly handed us over—save for God's protection—

To death, and led us to destruction.
