ليس الكريم الذي يعطي عطيتَهُ

ليس الكريم الذي يعطي عطيتَهُ

على الثناء وإن أغلى به الثمنا

على الثناء وإن أغلى به الثمنا

The generous man is not he who gives his gift

in return for praise, however high the price he pays for it.

بل الكريم الذي يعطي عطيته

بل الكريم الذي يعطي عطيته

لغير شيء سوى استحسانه الحسنا

لغير شيء سوى استحسانه الحسنا

Rather, the generous man is he who gives his gift

for nothing but his appreciation of goodness.

لا يستثيب ببذلِ العُرْفِ محْمدةً

لا يستثيب ببذلِ العُرْفِ محْمدةً

ولا يَمُنُّ إذا ما قَلَّد المِننا

ولا يَمُنُّ إذا ما قَلَّد المِننا

He seeks no praise as recompense for bestowing kindness,

nor reproaches others with his bounty when he garlands them with favors,

حتى لتحسب أن اللَّه أجبَرَهُ

حتى لتحسب أن اللَّه أجبَرَهُ

على السماحِ ولم يَخْلُقْهُ مُمْتَحَنا

على السماحِ ولم يَخْلُقْهُ مُمْتَحَنا

so that you would surely think God had compelled him

to generosity, and had not created him to be tested.
