    The explanation is for others, not for you—how

    could obscure speech be explained to one born to it?

    It is your speech I interpret, not my own,

    even though I now have a share in it.

    Do I know it, though I am no kin to it,

    while you do not know it, though you are its kin?

    God forbid! No such thought is entertained

    by the learned among the people, nor by the discerning.

    Yes, I have explained my poetry for people

    to whom eloquent verse is a foreign import.

    فإن سألوا أجابهمُ مجيبُ

    Perhaps they will turn their gaze upon it;

    and if they ask, someone will answer them.

    وإن سألوه ألفوه يجيبُ

    And if they stray, their guide is close at hand;

    and if they ask him, they will find him answering.
