The chamberlain saved you, O son of the chamberlain.
Your patron spared you, O son of the doorkeeper,
But where can a fugitive escape from me?
Where can one who flees from me escape?

You fled from us, and the chamberlain made excuses.
You fled while the doorkeeper apologized.

How strange was your state back then,
The one repelling us was the one drawing us in.
When we were the repeller and he the attractor.

Indeed, you have shown us blatant hostility,
That would turn grassy land barren.
Causing the whole country to become desolate.

That you are straying from its path.
That you have strayed from the right path.

That is an astonishing wonder from you.
A most wondrous thing that you have done.

You waged war on us when you lent an ear to slander,
Yet our ally when calamity befalls you?
While our party was your boon companion.

Some people's fierceness was feared, so they were favored;
A wicked horde was revered, so they were chosen,
But no one feared our fierceness.
While the reverence for our horde did not stir.

War is doomed, for the warrior is watched,
While no watcher watches for peace.
And peace cannot be disturbed by the guardian.

Uncorrupted even by the zealous partisan.

You still are one whose sword does not feed on flesh,
In advancing, and whose sea never runs dry.
And whose sea does not lack for rain.

Poetry is free, even if they walk safely.

Each greedy, rapacious, not content.

Eating what no reckoner can count.

Let there be no narrowness or hardship
Nor has its withered woody stalk watered it.
In what is granted them.

It has declared hostility to the rose; among its sayings:
For we have not seen desolate pasture
'The Shiite and the Nasibi never meet.'
Without a grazing beast dwelling in it.

Adorn the house as there is adorned
And then bestow on them thereafter
An upland garden watered by a pouring raincloud.
What the sailor and boatman have gained.

Bring them a beautiful woman whose singing
And repent for the sin that you came for,
Brings everything that delights them.
For it may be said: the penitent sinner!

مُحسنةً ليست بخطَّاءة

Skilled, not prone to mistakes:
So they may say when you satisfy them:
Her bird coos, it does not caw.
“Blessed is the retreating penitent!”

Fair-skinned and youthful, with full buttocks,
And if they hope for more, by their words:
Supple and tender, with a rounded breast.
“Successful is this returning absentee!”

Enslaved by the sword, seized by force,
Make amends with a prosperous day among them,
Yet her coquetry possesses and seizes.
No reproacher of its like remains.

Let it not be a day, once gone,
From a doe startled by a pursuer.
Whose loss cannot be recovered by the departing.

Except as obligatory for them,
A glass vessel being mended by a mender.
Since entertaining them is a duty.

For the man who disciplines his brothers
And the lute resounds in her grasp,
Is not their disciplinarian, but well-mannered.

A tawny doe calling in a meadow,
You let us down, violating your promise,
Answered by her bleating fawn.
So do not strike us with your searing wind.

With which to cover the broken promise.

Or summon then assault them with guidance,
No scantiness, nor the rough work of a rough workman.
For you, you are the triumphant warrior.

That they may recall a pledged covenant
Without a grazer in it who found fault.
In Ma’rib, even if Ma’rib is flooded.

Leave erring unjustly in our matter,
Whatever the boatman and ferryman receive in gratuities.
For the exemplary practices have shone bright.

'This returning absentee has prospered!'
Whose clay validates the tester.

If not for curing people of their natures,
The like of which no one would reproach.
The rotten would reek uncontrolled.

And whoever tomorrow equals your glory
Is hailed: 'May the departing one never return!'
Will bear what no carrier could carry.

Then their gate-crashing is a duty.
Your clamor will be helped by sobbing.

Seek worthless things and precious repute,
Let no attacker of yours spring upon them.
For provisions pass while praise remains.

This is all in jest, my brother,
Is not disciplining the company, but hosting it.
For your detractors, you rough and rugged rock.

So do not strike us with your stone-flinging wind.
You are a lion, while adversaries snatch cubs.

The chosen brotherhood between us
With your rainclouds hurling thunderbolts, not pouring rain.
Has no fleck from another to mar it.

If Ma'rib drowns in its flood.
And are not for the fuelwood collector.

The broad, clear path has shone forth.
