Tell the young lord of Bishr’s house—nay, him on whom their hopes rest—
Convey to the young man of Bishr’s house—rather, their hope—
my message: there is no shame in messages such as this.
a message: there is no shame in messages like it.
هلis it? جائزٌpermissible ياO أباAbu (father of) العباسal-Abbas أوor حسنٌfair
وأنتand you شهمٌnoble-minded ذكيkeen القلبthe heart نَظّارُdiscerning
Is this permissible, Abu al-Abbas—or is it seemly—
Is it permissible, Abu al-Abbas, or fair—
when you are noble, keen of heart, and deeply discerning?
while you are noble-minded, keen of heart, and discerning—
ظلمٌinjustice تَمادَونyou persist فيهin it لاnot يُرىis seen لكُمُon your part

A wrong in which you persist: no sign is seen in you
to persist in injustice, with no sign of your
of drawing back from it, though the wronged man keeps silent.
desisting from it, even if the wronged man keeps silent?
ماmā- (part of the fish name) هازِباء-hāzibā (a kind of fish) مَصيدٌcaught فيin فنائكُمُyour courtyard
مثلlike السبائكingots أشبارٌhandspans وأفتارُand thumb-to-forefinger spans
What prodigious quarry lies caught in your courtyard,
Māhāzibā fish caught in your courtyard,
like bullion ingots, measured in full and lesser handspans!
like ingots, handspans and finger-spans long:

في كل يوم تُغاديكم وظائفكم

منه وإخوانكم من ذاك أصفارُ
Each day, morning after morning, your allotted stipends come to you
each day your allotted portions come to you in the morning,
from it, while your brothers get nothing whatsoever.
of it—while your brothers have none of that.
أنتمyou أصحاءhealthy والمرضىand the sick أحقّmore entitled بهto it
فأنصفواso be fair إنّindeed أهلpeople of العدلjustice أبرارُrighteous
You are healthy, yet the sick have the better claim to it;
You are healthy, and the sick have a greater claim to it.
so be fair—for those who uphold justice are righteous.
So be fair: those who practice justice are righteous.
أولاor else ففيthen in درهمٍa dirham ماwhat يُستعفُّone can become independent بهthrough it
عنكمof you وتُقضىand are fulfilled لُباناتneeds وأوطارُand desires
Or, failing that, even a dirham is enough to preserve a man’s self-respect;
Or else, a dirham provides enough to make us independent
it frees him from asking you and fulfills pressing needs and desires.
of you, and needs and desires can be fulfilled.
فكلِّموناso speak to us إذاwhen جئناwe come لحاجتناfor our need
إنّاindeed we بذلكby that نستوفيobtain our full share ونختارُand we choose
Then speak to us when we come about our need;
So speak to us when we come seeking what we need;
for we shall count that as payment in full, and freely choose it.
indeed, thereby we obtain our full share and choose.
ولاand do not تشحُّواbe miserly عليناtoward us أنthat نُغَرِّمكمwe put you to expense
فيلتقيso they come together فيكُمُin you بخلٌstinginess وإضرارُand causing harm
Do not be stingy toward us, making us exact a penalty from you,
And do not begrudge us putting you to expense,
lest stinginess and injury be joined together in you.
lest stinginess and causing harm come together in you.
أقولI say قوليmy words وقدand already أنذرتكمI have warned you غضبيmy anger
ياO سادةlords of الناسthe people والإنذارand warning إعذارُclearing oneself of blame
I say what I have to say—and I have warned you of my anger—
I say these words, having warned you of my anger,
O lords of men: a warning absolves the warner.
O lords of men—and warning clears one of blame.
وقدand already خصصتI singled out أباAbu (father of) عيسىIsa بلائمتيwith my reproach
إذsince لمnot يكنthere was منهfrom him تنبيهٌa prompting وإذكارُand a reminder
I have singled out Abu Isa for my reproach,
And I have singled out Abu Isa for my reproach,
since neither an alert nor a reminder came from him.
since no prompting or reminder came from him.
أدْللتُI took familiar liberties منكمamong you علىwith أحرارnoble men of دهركُمُyour age
وليسand do not يستثقلfind burdensome الإدلالَfamiliar confidence أحرارُnoble men
Among you I have presumed upon the goodwill of your age’s noblemen,
I have taken liberties with the noble men of your age among you,
and noblemen do not take such trusting familiarity amiss.
and noble men do not find such familiarity burdensome.
فلاso let it not يُقابَلْbe met بإنكارٍwith disapproval فإنكُمُfor indeed you
قومٌa people لكمyou have بحقوقِof the claims of المجدglory إقرارُacknowledgment
So let that familiarity not be answered with denial; for you
So let it not be met with disapproval, for you are
are a people who acknowledge the dues of glory.
a people who acknowledge the claims of glory.
