الدمع في العين لا نوم ولا نظرٌ

الدمع في العين لا نوم ولا نظرٌ

ولا محالة من معنىً له خُلِقا

ولا محالة من معنىً له خُلِقا

Tears in the eye—no sleep, no sight.

Tears in the eyes, no sleep nor sight

And there must be a purpose for which they were created.

Inevitably it was created with meaning

ولم أجد ذلك المعنى وعيشكما

ولم أجد ذلك المعنى وعيشكما

إلا البكاء إذا ما فاجع طرقا

إلا البكاء إذا ما فاجع طرقا

And I have found no such purpose, by both your lives,

And I did not find that meaning, nor your life

Except weeping whenever calamity comes knocking.

Except in weeping when grief knocks

فخليا أدمعي تقرو مساربها

فخليا أدمعي تقرو مساربها

فإنها عبرٌ إن لم يفض خنقا

فإنها عبرٌ إن لم يفض خنقا

So, both of you, let my tears follow their channels.

So flow, my tears, wet your channels

For they are tears: if they do not flow, they choke.

For it is eloquence, even if not poured in anguish

رزئي أجلُّ فلا تكذب ظنونكما

رزئي أجلُّ فلا تكذب ظنونكما

من أن يُصدَّق مجلودي ولو صدقا

من أن يُصدَّق مجلودي ولو صدقا

My bereavement is too great—let not your surmises deceive you—

I have been harmed, so do not contradict your suspicions

For my fortitude to be believed, even if it were genuine.

That my suffering be believed, even if truthfully told
