Show me kindness, sons of Wahb,

for in excellence you are without peer.

You have generously granted me your approval,

and God rewards what you have done.

And I found the deeds of men

to spring from duty and generosity.

And I saw that what duty builds

    is not secure against collapse.

    Fault-finding is swift

    to undo what duty builds.

So guard your kindness from being

sullied by mere duty and fault-finding.

I seek protection for you, lest

Glory see you generous, then base,

or see your bounty made lawful

to me for a moment, then forbidden.

So be a man who pardons and is generous,

    then generous, then generous again.

    فللسِّقاطِ ذَوُو تَغَنُّمْ

    Leave grasping for gain to the base;

seekers of gain belong among the base.

Fickleness is the behavior of one

with two natures, who grows small as he grows great.

You see him miss after striking

the bull's-eye, and break faith as he hastens.

Whenever he runs, he makes lagging behind

his aim, after taking the lead.

    لِكَ إنني آبى التنَمُّمْ

    I disclose nothing but your goodness;

    I truly refuse tale-bearing.

Yet the tongue of circumstance after

circumstance speaks when I keep silent.

What praise is due to one like you if I am safe

with you beneath the shade of submission?

There is no praise unless you grant safety

to the submissive and the venturesome alike.

God has decreed that you should rule,

and, seeing a lapse, be forbearing.

And pardon me, for poetry is meek

in its meanings, and unruly too.

And its judgment's injustice is sanctioned

by the noble whenever it judges.

And for your excellence the decree was issued

that you should rule us, and we should serve.

And consider: is it after folly, or

    after reason, that regret comes?

How fine my words when I do wrong,

and your taking redress with a smile!

You are the one in whom close observation

proved true, when surmise proved false.

    And certainty declared him

a man of noble deeds; this was no conjecture.

    Thus his eulogist speaks

and is believed, while another merely claims.

    Long have scowling and resentment,

    fault-finding and irritation, endured.

If you feel no shame before

my face, or at my long complaint of wrong,

then feel shame before the face bestowed

on you, and shield it from scowling.

Do not make me wretched with your scowling

face, from which good fortune rises.

    Show me kindness, Abu al-Husayn,

for my intercessor is my claim to protection.

Abandon the severing of ties; indeed,

severing ties does not befit generosity.

If, for you, it is not like being crowned—

my companionship—what, then, is wearing a ring?
