    She laid, like rods of silver

    joined to red rubies,

    the fingers of a hand upon a cheek

    from which the water of beauty drips.

    And she gazed with a young oryx's eye,

    drowsy, tranquil of gaze, dark-eyed,

    sending a greeting with her glance

    to me, with enemies present.

    وراءها حادٍ مُشمّرْ

    And the mounts of them both are haltered;

    behind her, a camel-driver girded for travel.

    And tears in the corners of her eyes

    stand bewildered, for fear of the watcher.

    And longing in her breast bears witness

    to what she struggles to endure.

    It severed the strands of our rope

    and made us taste the loss of patience:

    وصفاءُ وُدٍّ قد تكدرْ

    a sudden, scattering separation;

    and the purity of affection has grown clouded.

    Ah, that glance of mine, while separation

    looks toward me with the eye of death!

    بالرَّقم والديباج يُسْتَرْ

    And the full moon, in its howdahs,

    is veiled in figured cloth and brocade;

    and its master, intent on its departure,

    is firm of purpose, never slackening.

    They set out early to part, and my heart,

    in its love, set out early with them.

    The eyes wept for them

    as I wept when they departed—and more profusely.

    عد ضاحكُ الأرجاء مُمطرْ

    So may a cloud of singing thunder water them,

    its reaches laughing, pouring rain;

    and may the meadows clothe their dwellings

    in wondrous, richly patterned embroidery.

    For by their parting they have clothed

    my inmost depths in fires that blaze.
