Shall ʿAmr ride, with attendants surrounding him,

While I lack sustenance with which to support my wife?

You lie! Qasim has indeed enriched my petitioners,

And I give him his due while my five fingers still serve me.

Except that, when I praise him, I complain of

Virtues that baffle me and baffle my fellow men,

And the threats he himself makes against me, though pure

Is my shade, and his ways have not been faulted in cultivating me.

He is the sun: its radiance and benefit envelop me,

Yet it eludes my touch when my touch seeks it.

    He was gracious yet aloof, and my longing intensified in his nearness;

And your creed allows my beating; your creed allows my imprisonment.

And I do hope that, bestowing favors, he will rebuke

An age that has long labored to deny me my due.
