وزادَand may increase جدَّكyour good fortune إسعاداًfavor وأبقاكاand may preserve you
Say to the emir: May God perpetuate your blessings,
Say to the prince—may Allah make your bounty last,
and make your fortune ever more favorable, and preserve you.
And may He increase your grandfather’s joy and prolong your life—
يسقيgives water السحابُthe cloud فتحكيهand so you imitate it فتشبهُهand then resemble it
ولاand not يشبَّهis likened سقياهits watering بسقياكاto your watering
The cloud gives water; you imitate it and resemble it,
The clouds water, yet you resemble them,
yet its watering cannot be likened to yours.
Though none resembles you in watering.
نضحتَyou sprinkled بالماءwith water فيon يومٍa day وقدwhile already نفحتlavishly bestowed
فيthroughout عامهِits year كلِّهall of it بالماءwith water كفّاكاyour two hands
You sprinkled water on one day, though water had poured
You sprinkled water one day, and you have breathed
from your two hands throughout that whole year.
Throughout the whole year nothing but water from your palm.
وماand not أردتَyou intended بإغبابby making intermittent الندىgenerosity قسماًI swear

إجمامَreplenishing مالكَyour wealth بلbut rather إجمامresting حَسْراكاthose wearied by you
And in making your bounty intermittent, you did not intend—I swear—
You did not intend, by holding back the dew, to keep
to replenish your wealth, but to rest those wearied by you.
Your wealth for yourself, but only to restrain your sorrow.
أجممتyou rested حسرىthose wearied أياديكby your favors التيwhich ثَقُلتْgrew heavy

You rested those wearied by your favors, which had weighed heavily
You held back the sorrow of your hands which had become
upon their shoulders, until that burden bent them.
Heavy on the shoulders until they hurt.

so they might rest and, through that rest, gain
So that they might rest, and by their rest, increase
greater strength to bear what both your right hands bestow.
The surplus of bearing what your right hand gives away.

You did not tire of giving gifts and so find relief in
You never grew weary of gifts, so took repose
giving them intermittently; rather, they tired of your gifts.
By holding them back. No! They grew weary of your gifts.

Nor was it the pasture's unwholesomeness that kept them away;
You did not prevent them from the pasture, though its seal
rather, your pasture surfeited the grazers.
Was but the Shepherd’s mark of your pasture.

The people pondered how you had dealt with them, and behold:
People pondered what you had arranged for them and found
your concern was for them, not for your wealth.
It was for them, not for wealth, that you made provision.
أمسكتَyou withheld سيْبَكَyour bounty إضراءًwhetting لرغبتهمfor their desire
وماand not بخلتَyou were stingy وماand not أمسكتَyou withheld ممْساكاas a miser
You withheld your bounty to whet their desire,
You held back your sword, vexing their cravings,
and were not stingy, nor did you withhold as a miser.
And you were neither miserly nor grudging in withholding.
هذاthis علىdespite أنّthat ظنيmy belief فيكabout you يخبرنيtells me
أنthat قدalready أتيتَyou took منin الإفضالgenerosity مأتاكاyour approach
All this, although my belief about you tells me
Yet I think well of you, and my heart tells me
that in generosity you have followed your accustomed path.
That you have excelled in bounty and in plenty given.
وإنand even if لهوتَyou played بنضحِby sprinkling الماءwater آونةًfor a while

And though you played for a while at sprinkling water,
And if you sported awhile with sprinkling water,
I do not think it distracted you from doing good.
I do not see it turned you from kindness.
بلrather قدindeed أقمتَyou upheld لعيدfor the festival اللهوplay سُنَّتهُits custom

وماand not عدوتَyou went beyond منof الإحسانbeneficence مجراكاyour course
Rather, you upheld the custom of the festival of play,
Rather, you kept the custom of play at its feast,
and did not stray from your course of doing good.
And never once turned aside from doing good.

No pursuit ever distracts you from the pursuit of generosity,
No business diverts you from the business of dew eternally
save its counterpart in the pursuit of your piety.
Except a like one, part of your pious duties.
قدindeed كنتُI used to أخطئُerr فيin أيامِthe days تهنئتيmy congratulations
بالمهرجانِon Mihrajan وبالنَّيروزand on Nowruz إياكاyou
I used to err in the days when I congratulated
I used to err, congratulating you
you on Mihrajan and Nowruz.
Upon festival and New Year.

More fitting than that would have been my congratulating
More fitting than that were congratulations
them on you, had I been granted that insight.
To them, from me, if we had met, on you!
إنَّindeed الزمانَthe age الذيwhich تحياyou live فتبلغُهُand so reach it

Indeed, the age you live to reach,
For time in which you live to reach it, O son of nobles,
O son of noble men, is surely envied because you live in it.
Is blessed, through your life, and highly favored.

So now I offer my congratulations to Nowruz
So now my congratulations go to New Year
and Mihrajan, when their time comes and they visit you,
And Festival, should they chance to visit you,

so that both may thank you for magnifying their standing,
Thanking you that undiscouraged by impiety
without any leaning toward heresy—far be it from you!
You magnified their status beyond all compare.

منfrom بابِthe domain of دينكyour religion بلbut rather منfrom بابِthe domain of دنياكاyour worldly life
Your way of honoring their standing did not arise
You did not do this for their sake out of your religion,
from the domain of your religion, but from that of your worldly life.
But for your life’s sake, from a worldly cause.
كاداboth nearly يقاسانare compared بالعيدينwith the two Eids إذْsince وُسِماboth were marked

They could almost be compared with the two Eids, since they were marked
They almost equaled the two Feasts, since they were marked
with the mark of two days among your days of amusement.
By the brand of two days of your pleasures.

They are not two festivals of prayer, but they are
They are no festival prayers, but they are holidays
two festivals of bounty for those who seek your largesse.
For whoever is honored by your neighborhood.

For your two palms, when their morning arrives,
At their dawn, when seriousness mixed with play
there is earnest work, though you regard it as taking your ease.
Comes to you, you see it as your familiar companion,

You give lavish gifts, playful and merry,
Giving the craved gifts playfully, jesting,
and amid your play you give life to the dying.
While you enliven, amidst the jokes, your dissolution.

Thus your Mihrajan and Nowruz have become
So your festival and New Year have become
equal to your two Eids in the eyes of the devout,
Alike, in pious men’s eyes, and your Feasts.

For in both every kindness you are its doer
on the day of your Eid al-Fitr or the day of your Eid al-Adha.
On your day of Fastbreaking or your day of Sacrifice.
