Say to al-Thawabi when you come to him:

O bane of ears and eyes!

If you hide from me, you have made

yourself worthy of my high esteem.

What harm does it do the eye not to see

    someone like Buhlul and Ammar?

O you who draw your sleeve over your face,

you have indeed drawn a veil over a disgrace.

You have hidden a face whose ugliness warrants

its never being seen without coverings.

A beard gave it away, though you had covered it,

as though it were a farrier's banner.

I thought it, from the foulness of its odors,

    dyed with pitch and tar.

What a face, and what a beard!

How closely the female neighbor resembles the male!

A face with a look that has always

    drawn the eye's disapproving gaze.

If only the hand that hid its ugliness

were pinned to it with a nail!

I pray against it, though it has done me a kindness,

and I am no ingrate for kindness.

For fear, if we lose its covering,

that we should meet an evil fate.

We ask God to let us enjoy its kindness,

for it is a screen against the Fire.

O talisman of the house that was bestowed

upon him—rather, O owl of the house!

No, you did well to cast it

over a speck of grit that causes harm.

And had you come forward and stood facing me,

you would have lined my eyes with inflammation.

Go, then, to Paradise, so you will not be seen

with the people of earth in one abode.

Words of a man who did not deem your deed

    harm—but rather a harmful man's favor—

like the hurt of a gnat in a thicket

that suffered injury from a ravening lion.

I ask God's forgiveness! You are not one

who harms except as a growling dog does.
