ردّني صالحٌ وقال اعتلالاً
أناI أخشىI fear ضراوةَrapacity السُّؤَّالِbeggars
أنا أخشى ضراوةَ السُّؤَّالِ
Salih turned me away and said, by way of excuse:
A virtuous man rebuffed me saying feebly,
I fear the rapacity of beggars.
I fear the harshness of questioning.
خافhe feared فتحِيmy opening بابَthe door of السؤالbegging عليهupon him
خاف فتحِي بابَ السؤال عليه
أغلقmay ... shut اللَّهGod عنهfrom him بابthe door of السؤالِbegging
أغلق اللَّه عنه باب السؤالِ
He feared my opening the door of begging upon him;
He feared my opening the door of questioning upon him,
May God shut the door of begging to him!
