Protect me, O my God, from my soul's avarice, for I

see generosity as a boon to me, yet miserliness is my nature.

This is not because I give no gifts,

but I possess what no lock can safeguard.

Yet generosity required me to give away my hoards

until God saw me in want of food.

But my soul preferred the abundance of its wealth,

and nobility is not found where wealth abounds.
