Praise be to God, who has no partner,

the disposer of affairs, the sender of rain.

You were strengthened by two sons, who have become for you in

governance like two hands to the back.

And gratitude for that means pardoning and

forgiving, O man of splendor and glory.

O most perfect of people in virtue,

among nomads and those who dwell in towns,

by the right of those to whom rights are owed,

among your Hashimites, the stars of the age,

show us kindness by granting full favor to Abu

Ishaq; you will prosper through praise and reward.

You gave him half your favor; now give

the whole, for perfection does not lie in a half.

He has gained the noble audience; so

replace your sidelong glare at him with a look of favor.

You are the straightening tool by which one corrects

    crookedness, and you pardon missteps.

You are he whom his resolve has raised

to the station of the Farqadayn and the Eagle.

And in purity of heart and

learning, you resemble your grandfather, the scholar.

God's blessing in him is not pleased

with your turning your radiant face away from him.

How many said, when told that Abu

Ishaq was setting out tomorrow with the travelers:

"A youth like that should not be exposed to

the land and its perils, nor to the sea."

Indeed, by your bounty—it is an oath

that takes the place of swearing and a vow—

I shall not abandon sincere counsel as long as I can, even if

you meet me with frowns and rebukes.

I bear witness that today, if he

is absent for a moment, you will be bereft of patience.

is like the mingling of clear water and wine?

Protect him from harshness, for his tender spot

is of your supple wood, not of stone.

    Transgressing bounds brings harm,

and not everything is accomplished by force.

Do you not see that, if you are harsh with a rod,

you pass beyond straightening it to breaking it?

You are not one who breaks what is sound; indeed,

rather, you mend brokenness and relieve poverty.

it ruins, ever since you were a boy of ten.

no dowry but favor toward your young man.

And if you persist in distressing us

over him, we shall complain to Abu al-Saqr.
