People marveled at Abu al-Saqr when he was

The people were amazed at Abu Al-Saqr when

appointed to the bureau after working for hire.

He was appointed head of the chancellery after having been a rent collector

ولعمري ما ذاك أعجبُ من أنْ

ولعمري ما ذاك أعجبُ من أنْ

كان عِلجاً فصار من شيبانا

كان عِلجاً فصار من شيبانا

And by my life, that is no more astonishing than this:

And indeed, what is more amazing than that

He was a non-Arab boor, then became one of Shayban.

He who was once worthless has now become honorable

إن للجدِّ كيمياءً إذا ما

مَسَّ كلباً أحالهُ إنسانا

Indeed, good fortune has an alchemy: whenever it
