Patience with the things laid upon me,
I have endured things I was charged with,
imposed on me now and allotted to me before.
And now I reap what I have sown.

Alas for the rhymes! Why have they debased
Woe to rhymes - they glitter and gleam!
my fortune, as though I had debased them?
My lot is as though I made them gleam.

Were they not wayward until I aimed them true?
If crooked, I have straightened them,
Were they not crooked until I straightened them?
If bent, I have set them right.

How many words whose striped robes I wove,
How many words have I strung,
placing beauty in their centers and along their borders!
Giving them beauty and ornament.

They did me no good, though I made them beautiful;
They are not improved if I improve them,
they showed no grace, though I made them graceful.
Nor refined if I refine them.

They assailed my fortune with their paring knife,
My luck has etched its disasters on them -
in thanks for my having sharpened them.
Thanks that I have honed them!

They thinned it when I refined them,
It has thinned them out as I thinned them,
and made it frail when I made them delicate.
And softened them as I softened them.

It has thickened them beyond need -
until it was as though I had made them dense.
As though I myself had thickened them!

Never did I slight them with neglect
in them, nor of any injustice I dealt them.
Or oppress them unjustly.

At my age, and in my prime, I was denied
Deprived in my youth and livelihood
my guest's fare by a world whose hospitality I sought.
Of sustenance from a world I hosted.

Alas for the world! Can any lament
What use my yearning for the world? Does yearning
win redress from it, if I lament it?
Do justice if I yearn for it?

How much anguish and grief over it!

I go forth, having mounted no station
I rise with no improving state,
within it, nor any station I rode behind upon.
No second to support me.

I lavished patience upon it despite its baseness;
I endured its evil with patience -
when it exhausted that patience, I sought its outer reaches.
If it grew less I refused it.

So its meager bounty defeats resourcefulness,
So stratagems fail the desperate
unless I myself make the stratagem subtle.
Unless I refine them.

Ugliness upon it, ugliness! Although it is
How ugly! Ugly that they
the ugliest thing when I lay it bare.
Are the ugliest thing when revealed!

They have oppressed me, seeing me a man
whom it had never seen mistreat it.
Who never oppressed them.

They have weakened me, and when
Abu al-Saqr's aid, I shall deem it weak.
The support of my father draws near, I weaken them.

I hope in him because of things I have tested,
I hope from him for things I have tried
not because of birds from which I read omens.
Not for birds I have stalked.

The delay before wealth reaches me is but
The time the wealth stays from me
a finger's gesture, or its turn.
Is but a blink or turn of the hand.

I consoled my soul with his deeds,
I consoled myself with his deeds
after having filled it with sorrow.
After I had despaired of them.

He may console me for youth now gone
And my lost youth consoles me,
and a span of life I spent before.
The lifetime I budgeted for myself.

I pondered fifty years now gone,
I thought of fifty years gone by -
once before me, then left behind.
They were ahead, but now behind.

ولمand not تَبيَّنْthey became clear إذاwhen تأنَّفْتُهَاI began them
They became clear to me when I reached their end,
Things became clear when I examined them,
but were not clear when I began them.
Not when I was heedless of them.

ثمthen نَضَتْthey slipped away عنيfrom me فعُرِّفْتُهاso I was made to know them
I failed to know them while they were abundant;
I neglected them, thinking them guaranteed,
then they slipped away from me, and I was made to know them.
Then they vanished, so I recognized them.

So I was denied the joy of one granted a gift,
Thus the joy of the granted is lost,
and added afterward the sorrow of one bereft.
And the grief of the deprived trails behind.

Even if my life were a hundred years, I would be crushed
If my life were a hundred years, what guides me
by remembering that I had spent half of them.
Is remembering I halved it.

So how could it be, when the traces
to raise alarms about my lifespan as I trace them!
Tremble with old age if I stand still?

There was a treasure of life; I spent it
A treasure of lifetime I could have spent
on vicissitudes I passed through.
On ways I managed it.

I have no excuse, after those years, for grieving
I have no excuse for my grief over them,
over gifts I spurned—spurned—
Over gifts whose plenty I wasted.

except subsistence: if you refuse it,
Except for overindulgence, if you insist on it
I would make my soul wretched, then destroy it.
I have tortured myself and ruined it.

Food to sustain the body in restraint,
Sustenance enough to maintain the body in decency
which I long ago wore as inner garment and cloak.
I provided it step by step and wrapped it.

And I exhausted the soul after
once pampering it and keeping it restrained,
Having indulged it step by step and refined it,

seeking no livelihood beyond bare sustenance;
Not seeking wealth but only livelihood -
if it went beyond that, I would rebuke it.
And even if that were exceeded, I would curb it.

I sought, with moderation, what would sustain it,
I sought only what sustains it in general -
and roamed the earth, making my soul roam as well.
So I roamed the land in every direction.

Good fortune turned grudging, so I held out hopes to it;
Difficulty tired me out, so I wished for it,
fate delayed, so I put it off with promises.
And delay of fortune made me wait for it.

To exceed fifty, I will halve it.

By the power of God and grace of a man
whose favors are life, if I wrap myself in them.
Whose lifetime, if blended, will double it.

and what a refuge, if I make them my cave!
And what refuge, if I take shelter in it?

O only one of mankind whom I did not find
equal in the earth that I traveled!
The equal of, in the earth I wandered.

my riding camels have failed since I drove them swiftly.
Whose mounts have failed since I drove them.

I have experienced of states I borrowed.

Drive ill fortune away from me, and summon wealth,
So facilitate for me a livelihood, and call wealth,
and remember the necklaces I once composed:
And remember the Suman who loved them.

Eulogies of truth I crafted,
not embellished with falsehood.
Not falsely ornamented.

I count them a complaint I complained,
to you, not a bid to ingratiate myself.
Not flattery I fawned with.

When I acted and pretended?

Rather I see I honored you with them
in truth that through you I ennobled them.
By truth - I swear I honored them.

From your own achievements I composed them,
I did not err from you in my stance -
not piecing them together from other men's achievements.
The heavens have guaranteed what I hoped for.

Many thoughts took turns working upon them;
You are hoped for by her I shot at,
for you I wore those thoughts out and brought them to a crawl.
You are hoped for by her I feared for.

You do not stint one who has labored;
How many eloquent speeches other than which no speech,
no, rather you see wealth as the remedy for that toil.
That have disgusted me though I befriended them!

By the right of Him who raised you above mankind,
I was glad, hoping and seeking nothing,
a true adjuration that I have pronounced—
And my soul yearned, so I restrained it.

I bore my matter with hardship -
a raincloud of kindness whose drops I await.
When it saddened me, I left it.

You are the one I hope in for what I sought;
Rather I feared whom I had hoped in
you are the one I hope in against what I feared.
And my soul hoped - so I frightened it.

has shunned me when I sought its friendship!
Promises to it if I pledged them.

So I returned, neither hoping nor seeking;
But I refrain from a livelihood
my soul yearned, and I held it back.
I disowned myself from when I knew it.

I was borne by my plight upon an unruly mount;
I say, when an adviser blamed me
I let it loose when restraining it proved beyond me.
For refusing blamable earnings exalted by them.

Indeed, I feared the very one in whom I hoped;
Though far, my father provides me sustenance
my soul hoped, and I frightened it.
If I lower my hands in request of them.

The fruits are on the branches of his branches -
I promised my soul your aid, I would fail it;
If I wish, I can pluck them.

Not like fruits I reached the branches for,
since knowing which I have been a stranger to myself.
Drawing them near, so I picked them off.

I say, when a counselor reproaches me
For his bustling door are benefactions -
for rejecting the scant pools I had sipped from:
They will blame me if I cover them.

That has delighted a soul I made bleak.

His fruits are on his lofty boughs,
My soul promised me benefit if
but, if I wish, I can bend them down.
After God, I employed it.
لاnot كَثمارٍlike fruits سُمتُI demanded of أغْصانَهاtheir boughs
إدْناءهاbringing them near منيto me فقصَّفْتُهاso I snapped them
Not like fruits whose boughs I demanded
By God, it will not fall short of wishes -
be brought near me, only to snap them.
The villages of its character I molded!
لِبَابِهِat his door المعمورِmuch-frequented أُسْكُفَّةٌa threshold
لَتُعْتِبَنِّيwill surely appease me إنif تسكَّفْتُهاI stood on its threshold
At his much-frequented door there is a threshold
My father’s boons I took glad tidings for,
sure to grant me redress if I step upon it.
Though I have forgotten them.
الآنَnow أسلمتُI surrendered إلىto نعمةٍa blessing
غنّاءabundant نفساًa soul كنتI had أقشَفْتُهاI made it live austerely
Now I have entrusted to a blessing
Take them, and do not frown at them - I have given them
rich in bounty a soul I had kept austere.
Beauty and scattered them.

إنif شئتI wish بعدafter اللَّهGod وظَّفْتُهاI assigned it as a regular portion
My soul has promised me bounty from him;
Clear from articulate, conclusive speech -
if I wish, after God, I can make it my allotted share.
I crafted it in you and arranged it.

قِرَىthe guest's fare سجاياهof his virtues التيwhich ضِفْتُهاI was their guest
By God, there will not fall short of my wishes
How many a gaze I scrutinized in it!
the hospitality of his virtues, whose guest I have been.
How many a pause I lingered in it!

نفسيmy soul بريَّاهاat its fragrance وقدand indeed سُفْتُهاI inhaled it
The bounty of Abu al-Saqr, which brought gladness
With the glory of your fathers I founded it,
to my soul through its fragrance, which I have inhaled!
And the glory of your ancestry I ennobled it.
خُذهاtake it ولاand do not تَبْرَمtire بهاof it إننيfor I

Take it, and do not tire of it; I have
I focused every subject on you,
adorned it with earrings and ear-pendants of beauty.
But from your generosity I have taken it.

فَنَّنْتُهَاI varied its forms فيكin your praise وصرَّفْتُهاand turned it various ways
Clear in firmly wrought speech,
I have left in all that adorns it
I varied its forms in your praise and turned it every way.
No philosophy unless I philosophized it.
كمhow many نظرةٍa scrutiny فيهاof it تَقَصَّيتهاI pursued it thoroughly
كمhow many وقفةٍa pause فيهاover it توقَّفْتُهاI made that pause
How many a scrutiny of it I pursued to the end;
If I have prolonged it,
how many a pause over it I made!
I have not condensed it.
بمجدon the glory آبائكof your forefathers أسَّستُهاI founded it
ومجدِand the glory آلائكof your favors شرَّفْتُهاI ennobled it
I founded it on your forefathers' glory,
Had my cheek deserved it
and ennobled it with the glory of your favors.
And aimed for me, I would have struck it.

لكننيbut I منfrom مسككُمْyour musk دُفْتُهاI blended it
I perfumed every north-wind-cooled wine in your praise,
O you whom when I praise
yet I blended it with your own musk.
I am generous to, even if I exaggerate!

I thought it through
In all that adorned it, I left no
If they were a night I would illuminate them
philosophy without thinking it through.
With your name, or a sun I would eclipse!

If I gave it quantity by lengthening it,
I did not give it quality through slapdash writing.

If my cheek were worthy of it,
and it presented itself to me, I would offer myself to it.
ياO منyou who إذاwhenever صُغتُI fashioned أماديحَهhis praises

O you whose praises, whenever I fashion them,
I perfect in his praise, yet find wanting!

If they were night, I would illuminate it
with your name; or, were they the sun, I would eclipse it.
