O you whose open conduct and secrets are pure,

whose disclosure and concealment are sound,

I see that you have punished me because I did not

ask you for something of great worth,

and turned toward what a man of

    ignorance inclines to and chooses:

it is incense; all we gain

from owning it is its smoke and swirling cloud.

    Its fragrances resemble

the scents of a garden whose blossoms breathe perfume.

You never see a sensible man buying it

unless his poverty has left him.

Yet it is nadd incense, a requested gift

too fine for its chooser to be blamed,

    especially your nadd, whose

quality saves its perfumer from abuse.

It was named nadd because always

its traces travel far through east and west.

Its fragrances roam abroad, and from

the farthest reaches of distant lands comes news of it.

As though it were your renown, about which an oath was sworn—

by benevolence—that its nightly storytellers would never sleep.

It penetrates the far reaches of every expanse

whose boundaries bar passage to the winds.

    أنجادُ إقليمه وأغواره

    its region's uplands and lowlands.

    When it mounts the wind, it travels swiftly;

alike are my praise of you and its journey.

You deemed a share of it too paltry for me, though it was not,

and so its delivery to me was delayed.

You would not excuse the man who asked little

for asking little, until his justification was clear.

The request of one who asks much is, in

your heart, like honey as you gather it.

And I repent to you for

asking little, with repentance sincere to its core.

After this, no demand shall pass between us

except for what brings no reproach upon its seeker,

such as a mighty, magnificent request for

influence and wealth that tips the scales.

You are worthy of that, O my support,

you whose house is my place of circling and my qibla.

O you who possess nobility entire, when

all humankind have but a tenth of it,

no shyness is fitting before a king

whose dirham and dinar are devoted to generosity.

but his warning is of extraordinary generosity.

What a denier and acknowledger you are,

whose denial and acknowledgment alike are honored!

    فنحن عُبدانه وأحراره

    His bounty has freed us and enslaved us;

we are his slaves and his freemen.

O you in whose precincts, when wealth settles,

its coming and going are made fair:

he brings it from lawful sources, nobly,

then sends it forth in deeds of kindness.

O you who shelter those who take refuge with you,

may God protect you from every calamity.

He falls short who asks trifles of

people like you—gravely short; it is time he stopped.

So pardon me, though I have asked you for something

a whole hundredweight of which is small beside your gifts.

And hasten the nadd; let it exhale a fragrant

breath, still intense even when its fire dies.

    يطيبُ إقلاله وإكثاره

    For a generous man's little is not little;

his giving little and giving much alike are pleasing.

One blemish of plenty is your cutting it off,

and one beauty of a little is its steady flow.
