O you who have withheld your kindness
O you who was stingy with his kindness
From me, though I have suffered sleeplessness over it.
My eyes have suffered from insomnia because of it

Pardon my stumble, for I am a man
Go easy on me for I am but a man
Who has always been prone to slipping, even when sober.
Who still slips often while awake

Of what I had hoped for, I am content
I was content with what I had wished for
With my copyist's fee and the cost of the paper.
A fine wage and the paper’s debt

So make these two my share, and pay them promptly,
Make them my fortune and expedite them
And be content with the delay already past.
And be pleased with the overdue bill

For a fresh delay is deemed ugly,
For outstanding debt is ugly
And uglier of the two is a delay grown old.
And the ugliest debt is an old one

Reciting my poetry about you amid the gatherings,
Reciting my poetry about you amongst the throngs

And if an inquirer were to ask
'What reward did he give the praise-poet?' I say, 'Anxiety.'
What rewards the praiser got, say: anxiety
