O you who hardened when I complained

of my times to your bounty,

and counted me, once I grew cheap

in your eyes, among worthless notions:

I shall keep your wealth safe from my hand,

and your honor safe from my tongue.

I swore never to lampoon, for all

time, anyone but one who lampooned me.

    No—rather, I shall cast satire

    aside, whoever may assail me.

    فليأخذوا منّي أماني

    All creatures are safe;

let them take my pledge of safety.

My forbearance is dearer to me than

my anger, when anger overtakes me.

Woe to my rashness, now that

I have given my forbearance mastery of my reins.

My shunning of baseness has pledged to curb

my edge; fidelity is brother to my pledge.

So I shall surely endure and restrain my anger,

even if the blaze of my rage sears me.

But I shall love my own

self, since others have hated me.

And I shall desire it with all my

desire, since others have cast me off.

And I shall see my own standing when

others feign blindness to my standing.

So that God may see how

I safeguard my worth and standing,

and sustain me, for my upkeep

is incumbent upon Him, just as He created me.

    مةِ إنه قدْماً غَذاني

    And surely You will nourish me with honor;

He has nourished me of old.

And if news of me should reach

the one I used to serve, he would meet my needs.

The planter of my spreading tree would not

accept my ruin, if he saw me.

And upon you a thousand greetings

from me, no matter who forbids me.

And against separation I shall enlist

    patience, if longing calls me.

And I shall find comfort in meeting,

however rare, if my heart urges me on,

until it becomes clear that I am

freeborn, though a freeborn man has shunned me.
