O you who bleed the vein whose bloodletting is blessed,
O you who let the blessed sweat flow, so pure
I swear, you have indeed clarified what was not clouded.
By God, you have filtered it, unclouded

A vein the steel's keen edge split open to release blood
Sweat that youths of iron see as blood
like the essence of fragrant, strongly scented musk.
Like the scent of musk, gentle and yellow

One is cured of intractable rabies, even when it refuses
It would cure a stubborn dog if it refused
utterly to yield to the greatest remedy.
All refusal, of the greatest healing

Were it water for washing faces, they would shine,
If it were water for faces, they would shine
and eyes would see in them the loveliest sight.
And sights would see for them the finest view

Through it, the physician's hand shed a few drops—
With it the hand of the doctor poured a draught
how many draughts of red death stand between one and them!
How many roses of death are redder?

Indeed, I think a hollow fortunate enough to receive it
I think a spot blessed with it
will become, at time's end, a mine of ambergris.
Will for all time be a mine of ambergris

If the earth drank blood for its fragrance,
If earth drank bloods for its scent
the soil of al-ʿAskar would have drunk the blood let from you yesterday.
Yours of yesterday the army's land drank

Destroy illness with it, and replace it with health,
Destroy disease with it, restore health
and wear life's new garment as one granted long life.
And don the dress of new, long life

You have left your bloodletting as a renowned white blaze
Your letting blood is a famed deed
on Saturday's face, until the Day of Resurrection.
To the face of Saturday, until Resurrection

It had indeed been a day with no distinction in its name,
It was a day once, with no fame in its name
so you clothed it with the mark of one bright-browed and renowned.
But you clothed it in features most excellent
