O you who ask me where all pleasures meet,

You have asked the finest of describers about it.

Here, then, is the account of it you requested,

    Free from taint and omission.

Take, O seeker of delicious food,

Two round loaves of bread made from fine wheat flour.

No beholder’s eyes have ever seen their like.

Then strip the two crusts from their faces,

    فانتف على إحداهما تنائفا

    Till both become smooth, level plains;

Then pluck broad swathes onto one of them

Of chicken meat and the flesh of young birds,

Their jūdhāb turning as air is blown.

And lay upon it lines of almonds,

    Facing lines of walnuts.

Their letter-dots are cheese and olives,

And their vowel marks are mint and tarragon.

    فرصِّع الجُبنَ بها ودَنِّرِ

    Then turn to the red, hard-boiled eggs;

Stud the cheese with them, making dinar-like discs,

Till you see what lies between them white as milk,

Divided into portions, like the brocade of Yemen.

Dust the lines with salt, but do not

Use too much—only a balanced measure.

And let both eyes roam over it, glance after glance,

For both eyes have a share in it.

And let the eye delight in it for a long while,

Then close the bread and eat with pleasure.

At times it looks like a waterwheel’s disc,

And sometimes like the gold of tresses,

And sometimes like a millstone without grooves,

Your front teeth having trimmed the rue from it.

Ah, those front teeth of yours—bite after bite!

They hasten the destruction of what you have built.

Alas for it! And I stand surety

For a stomach whose devil is accursed.
