ياO مَنone whom عكفْناwe devoted ourselves عليهِto him لائذينَseeking refuge بهِin him
فماfor not عكفناwe devoted ourselves علىto بُدٍّan idol ولاnor وَثنِa graven image
O you to whom we have devoted ourselves, seeking refuge in you,
For we have devoted ourselves to neither idol nor graven image.
ومَنand one whom سألناهُwe asked him قِدماًof old كلَّevery منفسةٍprecious thing
فماfor not سألناwe asked بقاياremnants الآيthe traces والدِّمنِand the ruined campsites
And you whom we have long asked for every precious thing,
For we have not petitioned lingering traces and ruined campsites.
إنif لاnot تكنْyou are واسعَvast in الأملاكِestates فاشِيَهاwith them widespread
فماthen not عَهِدناكَwe have known you إلاexcept واسعspacious in العطنِwatering-ground (figuratively, hospitality)
If your estates are not vast and widespread,
we have known you only as generous, your watering-ground spacious.
ولاnor شَقِيناwe suffered بوعدٍfrom a promise منكfrom you يتبعُهُfollows it
مَطلٌdelay ولاnor كنتَyou were إلاexcept صافيpure in المِننِfavors
Nor have we suffered from a promise of yours followed by
delay; your favors have always been untainted.

لضيقهاbecause of its straitness بكساءٍfor a cloak تافِهِtrifling in الثَّمنِprice
May God shield you from a plight in which you keep me waiting,
because of its straitness, for a cloak of trifling price,
ومنand from بصيرةِinsight رأْيjudgment غيرِnot مُبْصِرةٍseeing

إنَّindeed اطراحَكَyour casting aside حَمْديmy praise أغبنُthe most ruinous الغَبنِloss
and from a judgment whose insight cannot see:
indeed, your rejection of my praise is the worst of losses.
انظرlook إلىat الدنياthe world وزينتِهاand its adornment
ترَىyou see الكارمَthe generous man فيهاin it زِينةَadornment الزِّيَنِthe adornments
Look at the world and its adornment:
you will see the generous man there, the adornment of adornments.
فالبَسْso dress yourself وألبِسْand clothe others فإنَّfor indeed الثوبَthe garment تلبِسُهُyou wear it
زَيْنٌan adornment علىupon النفسِthe soul لاnot ثِقلٌa burden علىupon البدنِthe body
So dress yourself and clothe others, for the garment you wear
is an adornment to the soul, not a burden upon the body.
وفيand in ادِّراعِكَyour donning ثوباًa garment منظرٌa sight حسنٌpleasing
ولمyet not يُحَسِّنْكَadorned you مثلُthe like of المَسْمَعthe reputation الحَسَنِgood
And in your donning a garment there is a pleasing sight,
yet nothing has adorned you like a good reputation.
إنif تكسُنيyou clothe me يكسُكit clothes you المعروفُkindness منfrom كثَبٍnearness
ثوباًa garment جميلاًbeautiful تراهsee it أعينُeyes الفَطِنِthe discerning person
If you clothe me, kindness will clothe you close at hand
in a beautiful garment that discerning eyes behold.
فاكسُso clothe ابنَthe son of شكرِكgratitude to you ماwhat يَبْلَىwears out علىwith ثِقةٍconfidence
أنْthat سوفَwill يكسوكَhe clothes you ماwhat يبقَىendures علىthrough الزمنِtime
So clothe your grateful son in what wears out, assured
that he will clothe you in what endures through time.
