يا بني طَوْدِ المعالي طاهرٍ

يا بني طَوْدِ المعالي طاهرٍ

يا ثِقَاتي وثِقَاتِ المعتمِدْ

يا ثِقَاتي وثِقَاتِ المعتمِدْ

O sons of Tahir, the mountain of glory,

O sons of lofty virtues pure,

O those I trust, and those al-Mu‘tamid trusts,

O those I trust and trusts secure,

أنتم الساداتُ والقوم الأُلى

أنتم الساداتُ والقوم الأُلى

تَعِدُ الآمال عنهم ما تَعِدْ

تَعِدُ الآمال عنهم ما تَعِدْ

You are the lords, the people

You are the lords and finest folk,

on whose behalf hopes promise all that they promise.

From whom high hopes will not detour.

إن أكن أحسنتُ في مدحكُم

إن أكن أحسنتُ في مدحكُم

فأخو الإِحسان أولى من رُفِدْ

فأخو الإِحسان أولى من رُفِدْ

If I have done well in praising you,

If I did rightly laud your worth,

then one who does well most deserves a gift.

Then kindness lauds its brother sure.

أو أكن قصَّر جهدي عنكُم

أو أكن قصَّر جهدي عنكُم

فأثيبوني ثواب المجتهدْ

فأثيبوني ثواب المجتهدْ

Or if my effort has fallen short of your worth,

Or if my effort fell too short,

then grant me the reward of one who strives.

Then judge me as one who endured.

أو فردُّوا المدح مستوراً ولا

أو فردُّوا المدح مستوراً ولا

تُشْمِتوا بي أَعيناً نحوي تَقِدْ

تُشْمِتوا بي أَعيناً نحوي تَقِدْ

Or return the praise discreetly, and do not

Or shun my praise in modest guise,

make eyes that blaze toward me gloat at my expense.

And triumph not o’er one demurred.

هوَ بازٌ صائد أرسلتُه

هوَ بازٌ صائد أرسلتُه

فارجِعوه سالماً إن لم يَصِدْ

فارجِعوه سالماً إن لم يَصِدْ

It is a hunting hawk I sent forth;

A hunting hawk I sent ahead,

so return it unharmed if it has caught no prey.

Return him safe if he concurred.
