بنيO sons of طاهرTahir مدحيmy praise لكمfor you دونto the exclusion of غيركمothers than you
بحكمby virtue of الندىgenerosity والطَّوْلand bounty والبأسand valor والمجدِand glory
O sons of Tahir, my praise is for you alone,
by virtue of your generosity, bounty, valor, and glory.
كأنِّيَas though I إذwhen أشركتُI associated others فيin المدحpraise مرةًonce
بكمwith you معشراًa people أشركتُI associated partners باللهwith God فيin الحمدِpraise
It is as though, when once I shared my praise
between you and another people, I had set partners beside God in praise.
فماso what بالis the matter with أيديكمyour hands علىtoward الناسpeople ثَرَّةٌoverflowing
سوايexcept me فإنيfor I منfrom نوالكُمُyour bounty مُكْديempty-handed
Why, then, do your hands pour bounty upon everyone
except me? From your bounty I come away empty-handed.
إذاwhen كانis حظthe share of الناسthe people سُقْياrainfall سمائكُمyour sky
فحظيthen my share وميضُthe flash of البرقlightning أوor زَجَلُthe rumble of الرعدِthunder
When people's share is rain from your sky,
my share is lightning's flash or thunder's roar.
فلوso if كانit had been منعاًa withholding شاملاًuniversal لعذرتُكمْI would have excused you
ولكنهbut it شيءis something خُصصْتُI was singled out بهfor it وحديalone
Had your withholding been universal, I would have excused you;
but I alone have been singled out for it.
أفيis it within عدلكمyour justice أنthat تُفردواyou single out بجفائكمfor your coldness
وليّاًa loyal friend لكُمْof yours يصفيكُمُgives you pure affection بهوىًwith love فرْدِexclusive
Is it just of you to single out for your coldness
a friend of yours who gives you pure, undivided love?
وإنيand indeed I علىdespite ماwhat كانhas come منكمfrom you لعالمٌcertainly aware
بأَنِّيَthat I ماdid not أخطأتُmiss فيin مدحكمpraising you رشْديmy right course
And despite what you have done, I know full well
that in praising you I did not stray from the right course.
لأنيbecause I أتيتapproached الحظgood fortune منfrom نحوthe direction of بابهits door
فإنso if يكthere is حرمانٌdeprivation فذاكthen that علىis due to جَدِّيmy luck
For I approached fortune by way of its door;
so if I am denied, the fault lies with my luck.
وليسand is not ضلالgoing astray المرءa person's فوتَmissing out on غنيمةٍa prize
رَجَاهاhe hoped for it ولكنbut rather أنto يجورswerve عنfrom القصدِthe right path
And a man goes astray not by missing a prize
he hoped for, but by veering from the right path.
أطلتمyou prolonged وقوفيmy standing بينbetween يأسdespair ومَطْمَعٍand hope
بلاwithout صَدَرreturn from water باديclear السبيلthe path ولاand without ورْدِarrival at water
You have kept me standing long between despair and hope,
with neither a clear way back nor arrival at water.
ولاand not مثلكمyour like منsomeone whose قالsaid طالبُthe seeker of رفدهhis bounty
بخلتُمْyou were stingy ببردwith the coolness of اليأسdespair عنيfrom me وبالرِّفْدِand with bounty
Nor are men like you those whose supplicant says:
“You have withheld from me both despair's cool relief and your bounty.”
