O sons of al-Simmari, do not force me

to have verse stir up every buried secret.

I have overlooked what I have overlooked in you,

and my eyelids have closed over your grit.

Yet you have roused evil's scorpions again,

and thereby trusted one not to be trusted.

Do not let my forbearance deceive you about my rashness,

or my retreat into modesty and faith.

A sword's suppleness in the swing makes keener

its two edges, deep in the skull's seams.

I am not secluded far from evil,

    nor headlong along its path.

I strive to avoid evil; but when

my destined hour comes, I leave it to beware of me.

O sons of al-Simmari, had you not roused

the birds of my rashness, they would have settled in their nests.

O sons of al-Simmari, far, far from it!

You hoped I, a sure-footed mount, would stumble.

O sons of the man who ceaselessly works wing-quills

    through his earwax—that fool!

He was one who thrust a feather into his ear

until it vanished in the ear's inner cavity.

When it left him, he yearned for it,

and its loss brought something like madness upon him.

Among all we have heard, we never heard of an ear

afflicted before his with the passive sodomite's itch.

If it became anus-like, that was from what

it heard from you: the gurgling of bellies.

O sons of al-Simmari, you have corrupted offspring

and exhausted the semen of the loins.

So rest your penises for the blink of an eye,

and leave a remnant of semen for a fetus.

Who will defend women and offspring against you?

May God seize you by the right hand!

O sons of al-Simmari, you now owe

the Romans their due respect; woe to you, honor me.

I am one of them, and they are physicians for an ailment

within your entrails, slow to subside.

The bulk of your father's eloquence

was calling every sensible man 'thick.'

O sons of al-Simmari, what are those little things

between the jaws of your brother Husnun?

Some of his molars bite against others,

so they are sharpened without a whetstone.

No ceaseless toil but the toil of their mill,

or the toil of the mill that belongs to Death.

Do not idle your mill, O son of Sulayman,

for its reward is no small one.

I swear, if you endowed it for the poor,

the high price of flour would never touch them.

So seize the reward of endowing it, and make it

a source of pride for you in al-Musta'in's reign.

For this very time—there is no doubt of it—

you had, to my knowledge, been training it for some time.

I never thought a human chewed the cud, until

you were that human—proof beyond doubt.

O sons of al-Simmari, you taunted us

for our horns, vaunting your own horns.

I have assailed you with my edge held in check,

turning away from your women; so beware of me.

I had indeed aimed at you with certain things,

    things—what things!—that sever the life-vein.

But reason drew my reins back from you,

though a vast stretch of the course lay ahead of me.

Those who desisted did so before my fury,

and my riding through one poetic art after another.

Verse has room to swim in Qutata,

if you assail me and drive me into a corner.

Take this veiled satire as a warning

of eloquent satire, plain and clear.

And if wretchedness gains mastery over you,

my tongue is my pledge for what I have promised.

O you who deliberately stray as you travel,

in that straying lies the dragon's valley.

I swear, if you lose your guidance,

I shall surely lodge you in an abode of humiliation.

Then satire will not consent unless it makes good

the shortfall between your lean verses and my fat ones.

So I shall repay you in full: two measures for one,

a repayment that brings dismay to the debtor's face.

Had your folly stopped short of misjudging forbearance,

I would have met you with sober forbearance.

But ignorance and folly in you

hold a firm place within your hearts.

It is only a small part of your ignorance that you judge

a forbearing man as you judge a contemptible one.

And answering rhymes weighs heavily on me

when it serves neither my own vengeance nor gratitude of worth.
