Added to your nobility and noble deeds.

I found you like refined gold dinars,

And all the rest of mankind like silver dirhams.

You inherited all the houses of fire and light,

Possessors of ancient knowledge and mighty affairs:

Houses of unfading radiance and wisdom

Of the stars, whose path is not obscured.

Through it you see tomorrow as a beholder sees,

With an eye of proof, not a conjecturer's fancy.

Knowledge of stars within hearts that seem

    Stars concealed within rising stars.

Through it you showed al-Mansur his lot's success,

Though he thought it a crushing catastrophe.

You gave glad tidings of a hidden victory

That appeared to him in the shape of a defeat.

He had already covered his mounts with saddles

And bid his world a farewell of final parting.

He saw the Talibids' cause prevailing,

And turned back with the saddles of strong she-camels.

You calmed his heart and granted him

A breathing-space from false, suffocating terrors.

He had not moved before his glad tidings arrived

With victory, borne on sturdy, braying beasts.

You have remained a lamp of counsel and a refuge

For those after him amid fierce, dreadful events.

For those you tend, you are a sanctuary for the fearful,

Aid for the distressed, provisions for the exhausted.

When others cut at the extremities, you

Cut into the great bones of your wealth.

You became heads, with Ishaq's house their crowns

By right—and crowns stand above the jawbones.

By the sacrificial beasts whose throats bleed

At forenoon, and the mounts whose hoof-pads bleed,

The sovereign has strengthened his edifice through you

With true pillars whose supports stand firm.

I embrace you all in praise, and single out among you

Your noble man Abu Sahl, without injustice.

A noble man: I do not call him so for youth,

    But for those noble qualities.

He has a polished sword's luster and edge:

Excellence of character and sincerity of resolve.

A sheath contains them both, adorned with an ornament

God would grant to none but a cutting blade.

He possesses five fine, splendid qualities,

Joined in him like the joints of fingers:

    Beauty, generosity, elegance, courage,

And judgment that shows him the unseen, not mere guesswork.

Where in the world can you find a splendid noble man,

Gentle in manner, true in valor, resolute?

A man who cherishes his ally and holds himself high before enemies,

With a proud nose that bows to no nose-rein.

He bends an unstiffened side to one who shows affection,

But refuses an unyielding side to one who wrongs him.

He is sweet to the tasters' lips, yet

Like bitter sap in their throats and gullets.

He comes and goes bestowing, never abandoning

A defender's fierceness: withholding, but not depriving.

Mercury, sweet and witty, when at peace,

And Bahram, fierce, when not at peace.

A man whose names and qualities are so fair

They have become tattoos upon the undersides of wrists.

If people branded their foreheads with his praise,

They would find pleasure in the branding irons' sting.

I have found mankind either knowledgeable but inactive,

When tested, or active but unknowing.

As for Abu Sahl, I found him

Where all good things meet—not a claimant's claim.

I eagerly sought wealth and knowledge with him,

And found him one of the boundless seas.

I sought refuge with him from everything I feared,

And found him one of the protecting mountains.

He answered my call when I called upon people,

Some asleep to me, others pretending sleep,

With a response after which I shall never care

About anyone deaf to me or pretending deafness.

Marvel at one who, when another is called, steps forward

To answer for the uncomprehending man pretending incomprehension.

A man: if people saw affairs through his eyes,

They would see more keenly than through serpents' eyes.

He saw that excess wealth sickens a man's glory,

As excess food sickens a man's body.

He attacked excess wealth with his generosity,

Always the most decisive eradicator of diseases.

I tell those striving to break into his dust:

Leaping those towering masses will exhaust you.

Abandon your tending of wishes: I

See you in them as waking dreamers.

May God's hand protect you, Abu Sahl: I

See you as a hand that repels great calamities.

May you live as a mote in the eyes of your haters,

Happy as a bleeding wound in humbled noses,

A choking thing in throats unable to swallow you for hatred,

And a sickness in breasts harboring secret rancor.

You renew the traces of kings, and have always

Built upon what they founded, never demolished.

You resurrected them through a good deed you performed,

Whose beginnings are joined to its conclusions.

Thus the most recently remembered among them lives again,

And whoever lived in the earliest ancient ages.

No descendants have rewarded their people's ancestors

Better than by resurrecting crumbling bones.

Toward you we boarded the belly of a hollow, dark vessel,

Strutting in armor of coal-black pitch.

We race her counterparts and peers,

Speckled with cowries, dark about their cheeks.

Compared with eagles, they resemble them

    In fluttering wings and beaks.

    Eagles—not fledglings to be overawed

When challenging waves, nor decrepit old eagles.

They fly upon their napes and backs

Through a clamorous current, full of rumblings.

    وإن أُمهِلتْ زَفَّتْ زفيف النعائمِ

    When hurried, their flight is not deemed slow;

When given leisure, they skim like ostriches.

She knows she will cross a swelling sea

Toward one swelling with paired kindnesses,

And that her voyagers will meet land caravans

At his door, kneeling every swift, sturdy camel.

He is the sea whose shores never cease resounding

With mounts' bellowing, not frogs' croaking.

The bellowing of seekers' mounts is heard amid

Chants praising one who has never fallen into reproach.

Is there any reproach in the honor of one who, evening and morning,

Regards his visitor as an equal, sharing partner?

What excuse has a seeker of bounty who does not visit you,

Even if he finds only porcupines' backs to ride?

Indeed, excuse is cut off, even if nothing carries him

But his own leg, shackled in fetters.

It is as though I see myself already meeting you, smiling

Toward me with an unveiled, unclouded face.

I spend a sunlit day in your radiance,

Bound to a cloudy day of your generosity.

You fulfill all my hopes together and spare me

Worries like the points of keen spear-butts.

If seas stood between you and me,

Swelling seas that destroy floating ships,

You would subject their fish to bear

Your hands' gifts to me without delay.

Your bounty is bounty that hastens to everyone seated

Among mankind—indeed, travels by night to every sleeper.

No absent man is absent from your heart's secret depths,

Though absent from your eyes, O son of noble men.

I have given you this poem, white in a memorizer's breast,

Though pictured black upon a writer's parchment.

Far-ranging, traversing the earth, it never ceases

To journey through its highlands and lowlands.

Though belonging to the ears, it has grown fragrant

With your scent, until drawn in through nostrils.

It travels with remembrance of you that has always crossed,

Through you, vast wastes and climbed mountain passes:

The work of a poet proclaiming your excellence,

Wandering every valley in your praise.

    When chanting it, mouths remain

Sweet of teeth and bright of lips.

Ears incline to it at one time, and at another

One kisser after another bends over it.

Take it, to enrage a people who see it

As a choking thing growing between uvulas and throats.

When they fill their eyes with me approaching, it is as though

Their foreheads are drawn tight by cupping glasses.

They tried my flesh and tasted bitterness

That warned them off; they desisted without tearing their gums.

Nor did it harm the poem that no elder stirred his thoughts

    For it—neither Yarbu's elder nor Darim's.
