O Qasim, you who have always possessed discernment,

with good fortune and an edge in you that never dulls,

I came to you with excessive demands, laying burdens on you,

because you bear every heavy load.

And I wish you to grant, and to regard

my standing, without reminders of favors, as that of one granted a gift.

And that the gift be a promptly given gift,

abundant, yet in your eyes the least of trifles for me.

And that you receive me with honor, seeking to placate me,

as a killer placates the slain man's next of kin.

And that you care for me if my course falters,

with a kindly physician's gentleness toward a sick man.

And that, when I bow my head as a servant does,

you begin watching over me with a dear friend's eye.

And that you spread the shade for me and make it last,

for the shade of passing bounty gives no true shelter.

And in these lies every excessive demand; indeed, they

are truly weighty—except to every great soul.

And in my judging you able to bear them

lies an intercessor of high standing with every noble man.

And my soul has never ceased selecting its choicest fruits,

and giving them to you as one who is not miserly gives.

And it scorns a generous share, measuring it

against your worth, O giver of every generous gift.

Did you not see that, when a petitioner shrank,

like a lowly man whose hopes had been crushed,

I rose with a soul that did not shrink in fear,

so you would treat me as a man of stature does?

And my speech grew long as I laid down my terms; yet sometimes

I have found long speech not long at all.

And I have no equal in stipulating my conditions,

and you surely go forth at dawn without a peer.

So if goodness is a tradition from your forefathers,

one such as you would never forsake it for another path.

And if not, be the first, for me, to establish it,

for you have always been guided without a guide.

I raised you above other benefactors by asking these things,

    so accept no lesser substitute,

so that God, truth, and love may say:

A gracious man has fully accomplished every gracious deed.

And I am not to be deemed foolish for what I have sought,

nor am I a speaker of impossibilities in what I have said.

And how could I be restrained in asking you, after

you have flooded every path with bounty?
