O pupils of the eye, may I never lack your slumber!

Why have you exposed my soul to destruction?

If you have wasted my body, you have indeed

made my eye weep with the weeping eyes.

You made me languish like your long-lashed eyelids,

    with your piercing, weeping glances,

the day you cast, through curtains of

embroidered cloth, my heart into love's snares.

Then you consigned me—while you were granted

sleep—to tending the stars and heavenly spheres.

My father be ransom for those among you who, with a pledge, shed

    the blood of murderous tyrants—

    دِ عِراضُ الأعجازِ والأوراك

    slender-waisted, with willowy figures,

    broad in buttocks and hips;

with delicate teeth bared in their smiles—

    lightning-flashes to us when they laugh;

    بِ عن طيبها غصونُ الأراك

    sweet-mouthed, whose sweetness is attested

    by the sweet scent of arak boughs;

who lead astray the minds of

    worshippers, and tempt the ascetics.

However you may be toward me, you see no

joy in life for me until I see you.

Ever since I stood at the hour of parting

from you, I have been visibly wasted because of you.

The days turned you away from me, yet they do not turn

my heart toward union with anyone but you.

The leader of the Zanj did not inflict on

all Islam what I have suffered from loving you.

I used to hope for you, just as, in your absence,

I feared you, too weak to forsake them.

So time folded you away from me—oh, would

that death had folded me away when time folded you away!
