O protector of humankind from time's calamities,

and springtime for petitioners at all times,

what is one who unfolds praises beside one

whose bounty has folded away time's vicissitudes?

His hand has crowned the sky of noble virtues

with stars of kindness and beneficence.

By them every hope finds light,

and by them wishes find their way to him.

O brother of generosity and age-mate of noble virtues,

and lamp of guidance in every place,

your lofty qualities are so many that

we have run short of names for those qualities.

You are a festival for the people at every festival—

nay, by my life, throughout all time.

The people celebrated with sacrifices at Eid al-Ad-

    ha, and gave out slabs of meat;

and we saw the emir celebrate then

with full moons of silver and pure gold.

May God make your Day of Sacrifice a day

guaranteeing good fortune with the fullest guarantee.

The words about the emir fall short, though they contain

the full length they reached at Mihrjan,

for fear of vexing the emir on whom hopes are set,

and for fear that the ears might spit them out.
