O peerless among people in blessings and favors,

And you in whom refuge is sought from time’s calamity,

And son of those who built the foundations of their dynasty

Upon prophethood, the Qur’an, and the traditions.

The worst of the distress and pain within me

Is my loss of the fruit my eye gathered from your beautiful face,

And the loss of what you used to impart to my ear

Of the riches of knowledge, unveiled through eloquence,

And marvels of wit, adorned with embroidery

Too subtle for the eyes of the keen-witted to perceive.

You penned a generous gift in verses, in which I found

Lightness, though I had been beneath the weight of trials.

And how can I give thanks for kindness that brought well-being?

Impossible—there is no price for such kindness.

And before that, kindness from you comforted me,

Until I ceased to yearn for friends and homeland.

Marvel at a kindness through which I learned disloyalty:

For I do not yearn for a companion or a home.

O adornment of religion and the world, when both celebrate

And display the finery they have prepared,

O you whose enviers see that their withholding

Of fine praise for you is the greatest loss,

Your bounty is held fast in its dwelling with me,

And gratitude is held in pledge in its dwelling with you.

You made my love for you flow within me, through what

Your hands bestowed on me, as the soul flows through the body.

May the giver of prosperity prolong your life amid it,

Coupled for you with high glory by a single cord,

With yourself and your loved ones kept safe from trials

That cloud life at times, and from strife.
