O one through whom our age dispelled its darkness

    and smiled at the first gleams of his face;

and through whom the covering of its nakedness was restored

    after that covering had been torn away;

and one who, when a clarifying proof

    appears before his eyes, is never contentious;

and one whose honor God would never let us

    see sullied by reproach:

I entrust to God your favorable regard for

a servant you rescued when he was already lost.

He may be absent, yet sincere loyalty and

affection are his companions wherever he goes.

    فاعْتركَتْ والعلاجُ مُعْتركا

    An illness visited him, and he treated it;

and it grappled with the treatment in battle.

And it has knelt upon him, lingering,

so he has bowed beneath its delays and wept.

And fear of your reproach makes his bed

of ghada embers all night, or of thorns.

Yet it is his due that you should keep him safe

from anything he fears might overtake him.

And his failure in duty truly weighs on him,

but an old camel has knelt upon his eye.

He hopes, through the blessing of your face, whose

good fortune is long established, to sever the snare:

a blessing at whose touch a blazing fire dies down

effortlessly, while an extinguished one flares up.

How much health and well-being it has brought

to one with grievous wasting sickness, utterly worn out,

until his strength bore him up as

before, and his stillness turned to movement.

And every neighbor you have come to protect—

    that sanctuary remains inviolate.

And your servant, truly your servant, is held back

from his share only by what he has recounted to you.

Give him leave, then, to treat his illness,

and accept what he has recounted and told in excuse.

Or, if not, suppose I offered an excuse

in which I lied, like some who have lied.

Was I not, for my shortcomings, your servant—no

doubt—and were you not, for your excellence, my king?

No, rather—by my life—such is the truth, O

you, noble in branch and stock, and pure.

So overlook it: you have ever been, in pardoning and

forgiveness, guileless, yet seasoned in judgment.

And grant me pardon, indulgence, and

forbearance, until they say, ‘He held nothing back.’

Do good, and let me do wrong; then yours alone will be the

praise—otherwise, it will come to you shared.

And say, ‘He presumes upon a bond of long standing

with one compassionate to all whom he commands.

He found a master's bounty and settled

into ease; he found a place to complain, and complained.’

May your hands ever rise as you fashion

good deeds, until they shake hands with the firmament.

And may I ever have a rhyme of gratitude

in your praise, traveling at a gallop and a trot,

    delighting every listener's ear

with its beauty, and every reciter's palate.

Nor among the wrongs I commit is there

a breach of faith, as when a man strikes treacherously.

So feel secure, and grant safety to a youth whose

character has been recast since he saw you—himself recast as well—

(may God shield you from what you fear, and never

turn the heavens save to raise you higher!),

    فلا زلتَ بمرعىً مجانبٍ شركا

    and to anyone who grazes where he has no safety;

may you ever dwell in a pasture far from snares.
