يا رجلاً أوفى على كلُّ رجلْ

يا مَنْ متى تُقَصِّر الناسُ يَطلْ

O most loyal of men!

When people fall short, you appear

يا مَنْ غدا يسلك في أهدى السُّبل

يا ذا الأيادي والسحابات الهُطُلْ

Heading towards the rightest path

O generous one! O rain-pourer!

ما بالُنا نُجْفَى على رُخْصِ الرُّسلْ

عندكم وما شُغلتم بشُغُلْ

Why do we waste the leniency of the messengers around you

While you are not distracted by any distraction?

لا بأسَ إن كان صفاءٌ لم يَحُل

حاشاكمُ غدرَ بني الدنيا المُلُل

No harm if the serenity did not last

You could never betray the bored people of this life

أنَّى تزولون ونحن لم نَزُل

كيف يكونُ النقصُ أوْلى بالكُمُل

How could you leave while we haven’t?

How could imperfection suit perfection?

وبهجةُ الزينةِ أوْلى بالعُطل

أو ينكُلُ الماضونَ أو يمضي النُّكل

Or the joy of beauty suit cancellation?

Or the past forget or the forgetting pass

أو يغفلُ الأذكونَ أو يذكو الغُفل

أقسمتُ لا تفعل إلا ما جَمُل

Or the vigilant become oblivious or the oblivious become vigilant

I swore you only do what is perfect

وكُنتُم قِدْماً بني وَهب فُعُل

كلَّ فعالٍ لا يراه مَنْ نَذُل

And you were always, O son of Wahb, graceful

Every doer does not see who is base

بل مَنْ علتْ رتبتُه ومَنْ نبل

لم يأتكُم من دُبرٍ ولا قُبل

But who exceeded in rank and who is noble

None of you came from behind or front

ولا عن الأيمانِ منكمْ والشُّمل

ولا مِنَ العُلو ولا مما سفُل

Nor from the right, and you are closely united

Nor from above or below

لومٌ ولا لؤمٌ ولستُم بالعُجُل

ولا لنُعْمَى عن وليّ بالنُّقل

No blame or flaw and you are not hasty

Nor for the blessings through a delegate near a patron

ولا على الضارعِ بالأُسد البُسُل

لكم عن الحاسرِ أظفارٌ كُلُل

Nor upon the contestant with the courageous lions

You have nails that pluck for the losing gambler

لا تعرفُ البغي وأنيابٌ فُلُل

إنك إن ناقشتني ولم تؤُل

That do not know hostility with blunted canines

If you discuss with me and do not lean

إلى مُساهاةِ المساميح البُذُل

وملتَ عنّي وعدلتَ في العدل

Towards equalizing the sacrificed crosses

And you refrain from me and judge with justice

وضعتُ خدّي ضارعاً ولم أصُل

ولم أُهزهزْ حَربتي ولم أَجُل

I will submit my cheek and not question

And not shake my weapon and not unsheathe

حرْبُك لا يشهدُها المرءُ الفُضُل

لا سيما مَنْ دقَّ جدّاً وضؤُل

Your war is not witnessed by the most virtuous

Especially those who have a solid, polished arrowhead

بل مَنْ علتْه دِرعُه ومن جَزُل

وما جِمالي للفراق بالذُّلل

But those whom their armor is high and weighty

My beauty is not for humiliation

بل هي عن ذاك وثيقاتُ العُقُل

وعن سبيلِ عاندٍ عنك ضُلُل

But pacts of reason reject that

And from the path of an obstinate transgressor

وهي إذا أمَّتك أطلاقٌ ذُمُل

نوازعٌ لا يتَّرِعنَ للجُدُل

When they lead you, it is absolute guidance

Impulses that do not care for contention

فأينَ لي عنكَ أقلني أو فقل

حمّلتني ما ليس في وسعِ البُزُل

So where can I say no or rebuff against you?

You burdened me with what the weak cannot withstand

نهضٌ به ولم أخُن ولم أغُل

لا هَوْلَ إن صَدُّكَ عني لم يهُل

I rose with it and did not betray or wrong

No panic if your rejection of me did not sway me

تلك التي تُبدي المشيبَ في القُذُل

سُمْ مثل ما قد سُمتني من لم تَعُل

Those are what shows white hair in black hair

Name me just as those who did not rise named me

ولا تُناقش من له فيكَ أُكل

واعفُ ودع لؤمَ القرى لمن رذُل

And do not discuss he who eats from you

Pardon and leave the blames of villages to the despicable

قد كان عندي طيّباً من النُّزل

ذاك التحفّي فأعِدْهُ إنْ سَهُل

I had something good from the dwellings

That gift, restore it if easy

بل في المعالي حملُهُ وإنْ ثَقُل

وليس أخلاقُكَ بالجُنْد الخُذُل

But carry it in supreme deeds even if heavy

Your manners are not of the abandoning troops

المستعينين بها ولا الجُهل

لا تجعلنّي عِظة مثلَ الفُتل

Or the ignorant seeking help from them

Do not make me a lesson like the murdered

تُضيءُ للناسِ وهم فوق المُثل

محترقاتٌ للمفاريح الجُذل

Enlightening people while they are highly placed

Incinerated for the polished lanterns

أيُّ امرئٍ وازنتَهُ فلم يَشُل

قُلنا ولو نصبرُ عنكمْ لم نَقُل

Which person did you gauge that did not tilt?

We said, if we were patient with you, we would not say
