O lord who surpassed all in generosity,

And whose wisdom and comeliness are complete,

And whom poetic lore and craftsmanship obeyed,

While speech bent to his every wish:

Do not suppose the most binding rights upon a man

    Are rights decreed by judges.

The most binding rights upon a man are only

Those decreed by the bond of honor.

And my claim upon you is as you know; I have already

Put forward a promise whose bond is firmly secured.

And when a promise reinforces the bond of honor,

Then gifts and honor are rightly due.

You had promised me things which, if fulfilled,

Would rub my envier's nose in the dust.

And I see them delayed through feigned forgetfulness,

And the days have kept passing without them.

And I pressed my claim through silence, until

The faultfinders reproached me for persisting in it.

    عام أوْ لا فإنه استذمامُ

    So beware of saying 'yes' unless you also give;

    Otherwise, it invites reproach.

And abandoning silence is right when it drags on,

Yet the sleepers have not awakened through it.

The time has come for promises to stray from fulfillment,

And for the calyxes to bring forth fruit.

So remember the promise: it is like a covenant, and breaking it

Is like breaking an oath—a forbidden, unlawful act.

And wisely abandon delay, for it is an arena

    Where the ignoble tame souls.

A noble man's 'yes' is followed by favors from

Him, some singly, and others in pairs.

Nothing completes a spoken 'yes' except generosity

In deeds; and all things have their completion.

I have offered reminders; offer me a transformation,

    For Time is fierce.

And spend wealth, reap praise, and know

That a man of glory spends and gains abundantly.

And when has spending not been your nature,

When loss was feared from Time?

Both excuses have left you: neither miserliness

    Impedes generosity, nor does destitution.

And you are indeed one who should never show

Regret when you have made a promise.
