O lion, O son of Jahwar, there came by night

a dire calamity, the kind in which a lion is of use.

And in you are traits of his character,

praiseworthy ones that no one condemns:

not his brutality, but valor and

gallantry when honor is defended, and fortitude.

So you are today and tomorrow for one who hopes,

and you are today and tomorrow for one who fears.

My claim is the good hope I place in you, when

my hopes turn bleak and my resources fail.

Do not let the havoc wrought by Abu Hasan

tilt my throne, while you are my support.

For always, at every dark calamity,

black as it is, a hand of yours shines white.
