O Ibn Ḥassān, do not doubt my

faith, nor let suspicions about me pull you this way and that.

For it is affirming the oneness of the Majestic One, and believing

    what the trustworthy Messenger conveyed.

A rightly guided creed, whose guidance was shown me

by penetrating vision and a firm intellect.

Thus it has a firm bond about my neck,

and a secure abode within my very soul.

I am not one to exchange it, nor to turn

away from it; indeed, I guard it jealously.

Only he is lured from the path of right guidance

whom your witless judgment has taken in hand.

    ليس يُجزَى سواي عما أَدين

    So leave me, and look to yourself, not me;

no one but me is requited for the faith I profess.

And let gray hair restrain you from some of what you

    do—or your disfigured, shameful face.

How much insolence can there be on earth, O

roller? You neither desist nor submit,

in a marriage like fornication, except

that the one is dubious and the other plain.
