ياO عمروAmr فخراًtake pride فقدfor indeed أعْطيتَyou have been granted منزلةًa rank
ليستis not لِقَسٍّa priest's ولاnor كانتwas لشمّاسِa deacon's
O Amr, take pride: you have been granted a rank
O Amr, you have been granted a status
That no priest has, nor any deacon ever held.
That was not for any watchman or porter
للناسthe people have فيلٌan elephant إمامُthe imam of الناسthe people مالكُهُits owner
وأنتand you ياO عمروAmr فيلthe elephant of اللهGod لاnot الناسthe people
The people have an elephant; the people's imam owns it;
People have an elephant as their leader
And you, O Amr, are God's elephant, not the people's.
While you, O Amr, are God's elephant, not people's
عليكupon you خُرطومa trunk صدقgenuineness لاmay you not فُجعتَbe bereft بهof it
فإنهfor it آلةٌan instrument للجودfor generosity والباسand valor
You bear a genuine trunk—may you never be bereft of it—
You have a trunk of truthfulness that did not disappoint you
For it is an instrument of generosity and valor.
For it is an instrument of generosity and heroism
لوif شِئتَyou wished كسباًgain بهwith it صادفتَyou would find مُكتسَباًsomething to earn
أوor انتصاراًvictory مضىit would cut through كالسيفlike a sword والفاسand an axe
If you sought gain with it, you would find something to earn;
If you wanted to gain wealth through it you would have acquired gains
Or if you sought victory, it would cut through like sword and axe.
Or sought triumph, charging forth like a sword and an axe
منwho ذَاis it يقومُcould stand firm لخرطومagainst a trunk حُبيتَyou were endowed بهwith it
إذاwhen ضربتَyou strike بهwith it قِرناًan adversary علىon الراسthe head
Who could withstand the trunk with which you were endowed,
Who can withstand the trunk you are endowed with?
When you strike an adversary on the head with it?
When you strike a skull with it on top of a head
أوor منwho يَرَاهُsees it فلاand does not يُعْطيكgive you خِلْعَتَهhis robe of honor
لاdo not تُكذَبنَّbe lied to فماfor there are no بالصدقwith truth منany ناسpeople
Or who sees it and does not give you his robe of honor?
Or who sees it and does not bestow his robe of honor upon you
Do not let yourself be lied to, for no one stands by the truth.
Do not be denied, for Truth has no people
سَقَيتنيyou made me drink كأسa cup of ذلٍّhumiliation يومthe day تَحْجبُنيyou bar me
فاشربْso drink بكأسيfrom my cup فإنfor الكاسthe cup بالكاسin return for the cup
You made me drink a cup of humiliation the day you shut me out;
You made me drink a cup of humiliation one day when you ignored me
So drink from my cup, for it is cup for cup.
So drink from my cup, for a cup is repaid with a cup
حَسوتُI sipped منهاfrom it مراراًrepeatedly ياO أباfather of حسنٍHasan
فاصبرso be patient فإنكfor you أيضاًalso مثلهاits like حاسone who sips
I have sipped from it repeatedly, O Abu Hasan;
I have tasted bitterness from it many times, O Abu Hassan
So be patient: you too will sip its like.
So be patient, for you too are, like it, a taster
لاdo not تَحمدنّيthank me وشعريand my verse إنif لبستyou dressed بناthrough us
وإنْand if خَضَمْتَyou gorged بأشداقٍwith jaws وأضراسand molars
Do not thank me or my verse if through us you are clothed,
Do not praise me or my poetry if hardship befalls us
And if you gorge with jaws and molars.
And if you bite your lips and grind your molars
واشكرand give thanks لخرطومكto your trunk المُجديprofit-bringing فأنتfor you بهthrough it
منfrom قبلbefore شِعريmy verse وقبليand before me طاعمٌfed كاسclothed
And thank your profit-bringing trunk, for through it
Thank your glorious trunk, for thanks to it
You were fed and clothed before my verse, and before me.
You tasted abundantly before my poetry or me
لأنتindeed you أشهرُmore conspicuous قبلbefore الشَعرpoetry منthan عَلمٍa landmark
عليهupon it نارٌa fire ومنand than مرآةthe mirror of بُرجَاسa raised target
Indeed, even before poetry, you were more conspicuous than a landmark
For you are more renowned, before poetry, by your knowledge
With fire upon it, and than the mirror of a raised target.
Upon which there is fire, and by your mirror-bright brow
حملتَyou bear أنفاًa nose يراهُsee it الناسُthe people كلُّهُمُall of them
منfrom رأسthe end of ميلa mile عياناًwith the naked eye لاnot بمقياسwith a measuring instrument
You bear a nose that all the people can see
You carried a nose all people see
From a mile away, with their own eyes, not with a measuring instrument.
Projecting from an inclined head plainly, not by measurement
